Over 1% of the people in the state of New York have had or have COVID-19.

Worldometer shows 226K cases in the state with a population of 19.5 million. That's about 1.16% of the population having tested positive.

Not only that, the virus has killed close to 0.1% of the population (about 0.0875%- 17,131 deaths). That's a pretty serious impact on a state, especially so early in a pandemic.

It's a safe bet that actual percentage in New York is much higher. LisaL Apr 2020 #2

New Jersey, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Louisiana also have a lot. These states need a break. I hope they get it.

The 1 % are those who got tested. Lots of people have it but haven't got tested.

we've only just started to see the impact of this pandemic.

the hope is to delay infections to where hospitals can manage them or until better treatment or ideally, vaccine is available.

but one way or another, most of us will get it at some point....
