Mary Shippee voted for Senator Bernie Sanders in Wisconsins Democratic primary this month, well after it was clear he had no chance to become the partys presidential nominee.
Now that Mr. Sanders has dropped out and endorsed former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., Ms. Shippee is torn over whether to once again cast a vote for a moderate Democrat in November, after grudgingly supporting Hillary Clinton in 2016 and President Barack Obama in 2012.
What it feels like is the Democratic Party relies on guilting progressives into voting for them, and they dont want to have any meaningful changes, said Ms. Shippee, 31, a nursing student in Milwaukee. For the third election in a row, to have a candidate youre not excited about makes me a little more interested in voting third party.
Despite Mr. Sanderss call to unite behind Mr. Biden to defeat President Trump whom the Vermont senator described as the most dangerous president of modern times and despite Mr. Obamas assurance that the party had moved left since he left office, the youthful and impassioned army of Sanders supporters is far from ready to embrace a nominee so unlike the one they pinned their dreams on.

Sounds like Ms. Shippee is okay with four more years of Donald Trump.

(53,776 posts)healthcare field has any hesitance in voting to get trump out? I mean healthcare professionals are risking their lives everyday now because of trumps bungled response to the virus.
If that person is real she's nearing trump-level idiocy.

To not do so is to allow the idiot-in-charge to continue to destroy what was a pretty darn good country, pushing it further away from any and all ideals that they claim to have in support of some other candidate (yeah, I'm talking about you "Bernie-hanger-oners!" ).
There is no more room for discussion - VOTE BLUE or GIVE IT UP to IQ45.
Maybe they want an actual reason other than "better than Trump"

(68,556 posts)broken glass to vote for him...there is no better reason to vote for the Democratic nominee than rid ourselves of Trump (lots of other good reasons, Biden is great IMHO). The primaries are what they are...Sanders had every chance to win the primary but he pursued a winning only 30 % of the vote type of strategy counting on a crowded field until the convention to make 30% enough for the nomination...well it didn't go that way, and he did not expand his support-youngsters didn't turn out...so he lost fair and square and if the dimwit in this article prefers Trump who has killed thousands of Americans than she was never a Democrat and never will be ...fuck her and any like her. The far left better be careful...if we have to move towards more moderate voters...they will have less influence and it will be their own fault. Already M4A will never pass the house...we have 40 moderates...most will not vote for it.

(15,398 posts)I thought his first term was was amazing, and then he implemented "Stop and Frisk" (or at least that's when I first found out about it) and his silly big soda ban, and I have regretted it ever since.
He seems to have come to the light these days though, and is really making up for his past mistakes.

(2,955 posts)Not that they'll vote for Trump, but a lot will just stay home or vote 3rd party. Biden simply isn't exciting at all to Sanders supporters I personally know. The numbers could go up if Biden picks an exciting running mate or adopts some progressive positions into his platform. As for me, my vote for president doesn't matter anyway because I live in Utah.

(31,017 posts)Like it costs something? Ms. Cut off your nose to spite your face. Selfish and immature. If they vote third party they should feel guilty. As far as the Democratic Party, the name explains the principle. Who seriously gives a fuck if they are excited? Theyve been listening to the pundits too long and think they are special.

Whenever I point out these policy positions to the Bernie Brahs who inevitably accuse Biden of being GOP-lite, all I get is "Biden doesn't believes in any of that stuff, derp!"
I always ask them the same two questions.
1. Are you okay with another four years of Trump?
2. Are you OK with the idea of a 7-2 or 6-3 right-leaning Supreme Court?
They never answer.

We are in a precarious situation with the SC, and a minority with big mouths are considering not voting Democratic?
Maybe one day they will fucking grow up, but in the meantime, it is time to focus on defeating the nazi in the WH, and the repukes in Congress

(11,736 posts)There is no choice. Do I have concerns about how the DCCC and DNC treat progressives? Yes. My concerns about having a complete fuck up in the White House another 4 years beat any concerns about Biden and the Democratic Party BY A LONG SHOT. We can sort out concerns once we dominate all 3 branches of government and save the country from disaster.

(54,370 posts)They do not care in the least if the next two appointments to the Supreme Court are clones of Gorsuch and Kavanaugh. In other words, not voting for Biden to them is more important than whether or not they even have the right to vote in the 2024 election.
Maybe there is a point in engaging with these people, but if there is one, it has raced right on by me.

(24,412 posts)It's not our job to try to inspire or make them feel enthusiastic about Joe Biden. If getting rid of Trump and/or making sure that a Democrat selects Ginsburg's replacement or even that we have a sane government that can finish dealing with whatever is left of this Pandemic and the subsequent recovery by the time next January rolls around isn't enough for them, nothing ever will be. But, like some people have said, most hardcore Sanders supporters are not actually Democrats. They seem to be largely left-wing Independents whom were only interested in Bernie's candidacy through the Democratic Party and were probably never going to be sticking around for anybody else. But they may feel a little different as things move along. We wrapped up the primary very early this year, so there will be plenty of time for them to re-think their position on voting Democratic in November. I feel like they don't understand that you don't have to necessarily like or love a candidate for public office (and nobody is perfect anyway) but just have a belief that they can do a better job than the other person. And, on the merits and qualifications, there is absolutely NO comparison between Trump and Biden.

(11,605 posts)Especially the ones who at least say they are open to voting for Biden. In 2016 people were complacent - they thought Hillary had it in the bag. And for the youngest voters, Obama had been president for most of the time they remembered and they didn't remember how bad it was having Republicans in power. It'll be different this time. At least I hope it will.

(509 posts)Anecdotally, it seems the Bernie supporters that really detest Biden and won't vote for him tend to live in California, NY, or other blue states so I don't think it'll hurt Biden in the end. For some reason, the California ones are the worst.
