(1,718 posts)For most people the idea of social isolation is an extremely alien and disturbing concept.

(8,048 posts)underlying issues that the current crisis is bringing to the fore. To off yourself because you can't go to the mall or get your hair done indicates to me that you have far deeper problems than "the whole quarantine."
In fact, "for most people" the idea of sheltering in place to save your own life, or the lives of loved ones, makes perfect sense.
I mean for Chrissakes, people in London during WWII endured months on end of air raids. Millions of people around the world are today living as refugees, hundreds of millions have no electricity, running water, or decent nutrition. Even with the quarantine, most of us have adequate food, clothing, shelter--not to mention cable, internet, phones.
If having to socially isolate for a few weeks or even a few months is driving "most people" over the edge, then I'd say this country's mental health is far worse than I'd ever imagined.
I suspect a far greater stressor is the skyrocketing unemployment rate, which always raises the suicide rate, with or without social isolation. But that's not going to go away even if the quarantine ended tonight.
