Five people who attended a March high school basketball tournament in Indiana died of COVID-19, USA Today reported Saturday.
On March 6, over 2,800 fans filled Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis for the sectional semifinals.
That morning, Indiana reported its first COVID-19 case, and the state had not yet been ordered to stay at home to stem the spread of the pandemic. The case was reported in Community Health North, four miles from the school where the tournament would take place.
We started getting calls wondering if we were still going to play, Lawrence Central athletic director Ryan Banas told USA Today.
On March 6, the states health commissioner said there is no ongoing risk to the public regarding the first positive case. States didnt begin issuing stay-at-home orders until at least a week afterward.
On March 10, the Ivy League scrapped its basketball tournament, becoming the first conference to do so. Later on in the month, the NCAA cancelled March Madness.

(65,371 posts)It's like DU & Discussionist rolled into one. "Prolife" maniacs jumping on "if you're for abortion" & "Muslim president & I'm armed" nonsense along with people with a brain.
There's 2700+, so I didn't read them all. Just 150 or so.

(3,697 posts)Folks in Indiana are basketball crazy. This is so tragic. I was surprised that our GOP governor finally issued a stay at home order and this may have been why. These are lives that could have been saved had Trump and the Feds issued warnings sooner.

(100,136 posts)If this happened the first week of March then it was in America well before March 10th. There's something very fishy going on here and I can't quite put my finger on it.

(65,371 posts)...think it could have come here as early as November. Even in the Chicago market, some med records people are combing files because of the unexpectedly high # of cases of bronchitis & pneumonia in December.
