WWII: ration books, metal drives, meatless recipes
Oil crisis 1973 and years following: economy collapsed because of the extreme increase in oil prices, gas rationing, alternate days, inflation (anyone remember the WIN buttons?) soy meat and beef mixtures, price controls, and other measures to get us through.
2001: no commercial flights for at least 2 days (seemed longer)
I just listened to an audio book set in that time in London. Mentioned that Heath called for early closing of entertainment venues and restaurants, and there was a problem with hoarding toilet paper.
We have been here before. And we saw those earlier times as inconveniences, rather than a call to take less, use less. So as soon as the corporations thought consumers were used to higher prices and shortages, they encouraged everyone to get back to normal. Will we learn from this latest disaster? Or just move on t the next disaster with more supply chain problems and deaths?

(16,949 posts)Going with the justification that it is our right as Americans to protest the state policies closing places to the public. I pointed out that in WWII London, the government sounded air raid sirens to give the citizens a chance to get to air raid shelters. So they had a chance to live to clear the rubble. Haven't heard back from him. Which may be fine.
