A 21-year-old Tennessee woman who bragged on social media about not taking the coronavirus outbreak seriously has been diagnosed with the deadly illness, according to a report.
Ireland Tate joked about not following instructions to stay home and practice social distancing amid the pandemic just days before she fell sick, news station WZTV reported.
In a social media video, the Nashville resident told her followers that shes aware that were supposed to be self-quarantining and social distancing to keep everyone safe but that she wasnt worried.
Cool. I get it. I just dont think that Im going to get the virus, Tate said in the video.

(11,760 posts)Sorry to any 21 year olds on DU. I remember my choices around that age. Experience is a harsh but effective teacher in life. Hopefully she will survive this situation without too much damage. Hopefully she will take something away from it and not be so quick to think herself invincible in the future.
And MOST HOPEFULLY, she did not infect other people because of her own naive arrogance.

(15,431 posts)The only thing I can think of is "tate" being like "potato"... and taking the name as a reference to the Irish potato famine??? Seems like that way too much of a stretch for what you're getting at.

(21,765 posts)She bragged about not not distancing because she didn't believe she would get it. Did not get it that the reason for distancing.is to stop the chain of transmission. Selfishly made it all about herself and whether or not she would get it.

(14,863 posts)If she spread it around, it might cull some of her older relatives, friends, neighbors, etc. But she'll probably come out of it just fine.

(6,937 posts)Here's a statistic in Kansas of positive tests. There is a higher percentage in the 20-34 age group than in two groups that represent 65-84 year olds. At that age most figure nothing can hurt them and that's why CV will explode when all those "good ole boy" Governors re-open their States.

(935 posts)I am following all best practices, and I'm still scared shitless. They were looking at an ice arena to store overflow bodies from the morgue. I FUCKING GET IT! And the thought of me possibly having it and be asymptomatic is troubling. I am really sick of being home, but it is what the fuck it is. Anyone who is cavalier about this virus, please, get your guns, and giant trump flags and report to that Walmart in Texas. Make one trip. Little revival in the parking lot.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Existential_Psychotherapy_(book)
Existential Psychotherapy is a book about existential psychotherapy by the American psychiatrist Irvin D. Yalom, in which the author, addressing clinical practitioners, offers a brief and pragmatic introduction to European existential philosophy, as well as to existential approaches to psychotherapy. He presents his four ultimate concerns of lifedeath, freedom, isolation, and meaninglessnessand discusses developmental changes, psychopathology and psychotherapeutic strategies with regard to these four concerns.
Their demonstration of personal "specialness" is really on display these days.

People like that don't deserve the same priority for medical care as those who tried NOT to get sick.

(111,437 posts)and while I didn't have any illusions about being invulnerable to illness at that age, I still did enough magical thinking in other areas to make up for it. 21 year olds get to be that dumb.
If it persists 4 years later, then we can call their sanity into question.

(111,437 posts)you were an old maid if you weren't barried by 21. High school girls had weddings, some as young as 16, I often wonder what happened to those poor girls.
So I clutched my ragged spinster's cloak around me and decamped for Boston. The expiration date there was in the 40s.

(54,502 posts)If she learned from it and got a lot wiser, then there's hope for her yet, although it's awful that the awakening has to come from a disease that could just as easily have killed her. You shouldn't need to drive into a tree to figure out that driving at 120 mph on rural roads is foolish.

(2,104 posts)<Tate said she likely got the virus from a pal in her group of friends and shes now warning other young people to stay home.
While it may not be affecting you, you could be affecting someones grandma or grandpa or aunt or uncle or sister, Tate told the outlet.>

(38,603 posts)For a lot of people who contract the virus, maybe it isn't a big deal. Some never get sick or show symptoms.
But.... they can still spread it. And they can spread it to people who may not be physically equipped to fight off the virus.
And then there's the 3rd part of the story... those people can spread it.
And so on.

At least some saving grace is she is now warning her careless friends.
