Kim Jong Un update from CNN

Will Ripley

@willripleyCNN
#breaking Satellite images show what is likely North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's train at his compound in Wonsan. This doesn't prove or disprove anything about his health. But for context, Kim usually prefers to fly to Wonsan. A train is a far more formal/solemn way to travel.

They don't even like patients to fly if they've had a cast put on a broken bone for a week or 2.
IIRC, they are concerned about pressurization effects on any swollen, healing parts due to clotting concerns.

It doesn't affect me much whether he is dead or alive. Even if he is dead, the successor will probably run North Korea the same way. It isn't suddenly going to become a democracy.

Though, I guess the instability of a new ruler and the power grab/struggle will be unsettling for the world.

9. South Korea media says he went to Wonsan to prevent catching Covid in Pyongyang

Apr 2020

It has been reported that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un who has recently become subject to rumors about his health moved to Wonsan to avoid COVID-19. The U.S. authorities captured Kim walking on his own.

“It has been identified that Kim Jong Un had been staying in Wonsan during the entire last week,” said a U.S. government official. “He was seen to be walking on his own between April 15 and 20.” It has been reported that the movements of Kim’s cars and close associates were also witnessed and Kim was walking on his own without help from others or being in a wheelchair. The U.S. authorities seem to have identified such information based on the analysis of radars and images captured by reconnaissance planes.

“As some of Kim’s aids and high-ranking officials have contracted COVID-19, Kim seems to have left Pyongyang, which has a high population density, as a preventive measure,” said the official regarding the reasons why the North Korean leader has not made a public appearance since April 11.

In addition, the U.S. government is also weighing the possibility that Kim received medical procedures in his Wonsan residence, which is equipped with medical facilities. “We are trying to figure out the specific conditions of the North Korean leader,” said the official. Meanwhile, multiple sources for North Korea said that they heard some medical procedures were done but it is unlikely that Kim is in a critical condition.

that Kim's still alive. None of our big media have been able to verify the walking sighting, though, while they're all over the Wonsan train pix.

38north.org thinks NK's tight national lockdown that began in January, 6 weeks before Italy's, probably worked and any COVID inside NK has been minimal and quickly contained. No mention of people around Kim contracting it. They do know that NK did a lot of things very early, comprehensively, and effectively as far as containment and advance preparations go. It's not the first time, and now there're indications that controls are being relaxed.

That doesn't mean Kim couldn't have been alarmed for his own health anyway, of course.

I read a report that a week or so ago relatively privileged people people in Pyongyang were "panic buying." Whatever that was supposed to be responding to. But since everything from stocking extra toilet paper to packing photo albums and important papers in the car as forest fires approach is called "panic" here, I have no idea what that was supposed to mean. NK's ability to feed itself has made big advances, but widespread famine from any type of civil disruption is still apparently a real danger.

I bet we know a lot more about Kim than we can say, or tell Trump, without blowing some deep cover agent(s).
