I'm in a blue area of a red midwestern region, haven't been inside any stores but have seen a few with masks on going in and out of grocery stores and Target but not everyone, seen even less with masks on at Quiktrip including the employees, Hy-Vee is mandating masks for employees, masks are only a recommendation at this point, not any store or local requirement, the sprawl of the area probably spared it from a major outbreak outside of some nursing homes, some places around here begin lifting orders next week

(113,546 posts)all the staff were masked and gloved, almost all customers (the ones who weren't got dirty looks from most), and more than half were gloved as well. Cannot speak to what the rwnj's side of town is doing. May all the rwnj's croak.

(14,856 posts)That was about a week ago, and the employees were not wearing masks either!
Kroger finally made masks a requirement for their employees a few days ago.
Gov. DeWine initially made it a requirement for customers to wear masks in stores too, but later backed down!

(23,337 posts)Most people wear masks. All age groups. The only people who arent are the twenty somethings. Almost all stores that are open are requiring face covering to enter.

(30,540 posts)about a week and a half ago everyone (customers, employees even kids) were wearing masks. The stores all have signs that say if you're face isn't covered you can't come in.

My best fit based on that criteria which is a bit silly was the Boulder CO area.

(7,947 posts)I live in the midwest, but in a biggish city, with a lot of cases-- everyone knows someone who is sick.
Most of the people not masked are young.
All the cashiers and fast-food workers are masked and gloved. The gov hasn't yet mandated that, but it looks like most of the managers have been able to get masks and gloves and required their employees to wear them.
There are some really styling masks... they put my homemade "no-sew" pillowcase one to shame.

(981 posts)We live in the town of Goldfield, Nevada (population 300). This is in deep red rural Nevada: Trump won 77.78% of the vote in Esmeralda County and HRC won 15.37%. (Hillary just barely won Nevada overall.)
People in our town are ignoring social distancing guidelines; I see cars parked at friends' houses for dinners; people go to church events; I have yet to see a single mask in use. I heard that some people gather for karaoke 2-3 nights a week.
There are no recorded cases in this county yet, but NO testing either, so it's alla big unknown here.
It seems that people here don't believe the virus will ever get here, despite the fact that everyone goes to other cities (Tonopah, Pahrump, Bishop or Las Vegas) for shopping and services, so they are risking exposure there.
Sadly, if the virus does spread to this county it will be a disaster as there are NO health care services other than very basic EMT responders, no testing, no doctors, no nurses and no functioning health department. Plus the population is elderly.
In Tonopah at least, 26 miles from Goldfield, where we shop for food, about half the customers wear masks while the other half ignore social distancing guidelines and act as if nothing is different. Only one doctor there and no hospital.

(65,160 posts)In grocery stores, maybe 60%, or a bit less.
Sit in parking lot of Ace, maybe 1 in 5. Pharmacy over half.
That said, essentially all staff is wearing them. Not sure about the hardware store. Had no need to go in.
So, high among staff, more customers than I thought it would be, but only about 3 in 5.
Shockingly very few customers with gloves of any type!

(54,053 posts)There's a countywide order mandating the masks. I'm pretty sure the police and sheriff department will not be enforcing that, although there is $1,000 ticket for violating that county order.

Why are almost all Chinese takeouts closed?
Why is Harbor Freight Tools open? And Dollar Tree?
Why is Gold's Gym open, but Planet Fitness closed?

(36,281 posts)Went grocery shopping yesterday. It was my first outing in almost a week. Pretty much everyone wore masks. I saw one guy with a full organic solvents quality carbon cartridge mask, and another guy who just kept his full face motorcycle helmet on. Grocery stores had social distancing tape on the floor and one-way traffic in the aisles. I had to circle some of them over and over to find things without backtracking. The employees were all masked, too. I ran several errands and found that true everywhere.
Less encouraging, I could not find replacement masks anywhere. Tried two hardware stores, two grocery stores, and three pharmacies/dept store, i.e CVS, Rite-Aid, and Walgreens. We bought a pair of masks right at the beginning of California's SIP order from some neighborhood angels who were making them, so we have those. I have two dust masks from my workshop, one of them is disposable and getting pretty ragged. The other desperately needs a new filter insert. I've had some on order from Amazon for a couple of weeks now, but no sign of them.

(10,579 posts)Its required now in most places (anywhere you might not be able to social distance, grocery stores etc.) About 60% of the people walking in the neighborhood, even a few runners, have them on.

(5,316 posts)...the face mask percentage at the Stater Bros is, from what I could see, 99% (I did see a guy with a mask, but it was pulled down, exposing all of his various face-holes to the general public).
I go there right when they open, so there are very few people there - with virtually all wearing masks - and maintaining the 6' social distancing is generally easy to do, except when passing by somebody else for a fleeting moment.
Plus, going there at opening time, they've presumably done the overnight cleansing procedures, so it's all good.
So, Two Thumbs Up for Stater Bros Pasadena CA!

(589 posts)After decades in cities I moved out to an off-grid yurt in the woods in a REALLY rural area...towns of 600 people or so. The largest town in the area has an awkward mix of Trumpers, Trustafarians drawn to Organic Valley and a Waldorf school, wannabee New Age gurus, conspiracy thinkers, and the Amish and Mennonites.
So there's your cultural backdrop. We are a microcosm of cultural division here.
There are Trumper stores and Newcomer stores (like the local co-op)...at the Trumper stores I'd says masks are at about 30%, at the co-op it's about 80%. It's been steadily increasing, especially among people over 50 or so.
On the weekends as I drive around I've seen an almost total lack of distancing among the part-timers who come out here for the fishing and kayaking and such. Huge draw here. Large groups of people in from the cities all clustered together bringing their pathogens with them as they jauntily bounce in and out of the local stores and gas stations, mask-free.
KT2000
(20,586 posts)I went to the store in our small town and I would say about 80% with masks. Went to the Walmart in the next town which is larger and it was about 15% wore masks. I will stay out of that town from now on.
