without masks. And I'm not talking about just young, twenty-somethings who think they're invincible, there are some 50 and 60-year-old fools foolishly walking around all Alfred E. Newman-like"what, me worry".
Either they're just zip damn, low-info fools or they've bought the trump hype whole hog. Hard to believe adults came be this stupid.
I'm in Vegas, btw.

(31,997 posts)That requiring masks is a step too far and government overreach
Instead we were told it is strongly suggested. Although any store can require them or else no entry.
But you know this just gives permission to the yahoos to be yahoos....

Masks are not a big inconvenience, and we clearly have too many dummies who wont wear them without being compelled by law.
Ive been pushing masks long before the CDC made it an official recommendation. Mask-wearing countries have fared much better through this pandemic.

It shows you're conscientious, you care about not infecting others.. and a reminder there's a deadly silent, invisible CV out there.

(205,320 posts)The only ones without masks that I've seen were teenagers - traveling in groups. But I'm in New York and masks are required. There are signs on the doors of most stores and some stores only allow so many customers inside at a time. And anyone without a mask sticks out since everyone else is wearing them.

(16,672 posts)The cashiers have plexi- glass in front of them too in most spots. That's still a work in progress I think. Also, they only let so many in a store at once. At least the stores I have gone to.
Stay safe there in NY.

(205,320 posts)And I used the self-check-out at the grocery store, they said that if you bring your reusable bag (elimination of plastic bags became policy in March), you need to pack it yourself. And everyone is wearing masks, it's required in the stores I've visited. It's a bit confusing, since each store has its own protocol (which started with the elimination of single use plastic bags), so I just go to the one store for groceries and one other to get food for my dog and cat. And the pet supply store is the stricter of the two, they close much earlier now and only let 10 shoppers in the store at once - initially, it was only 6!
And stay safe in California! At least our respective governors are leading the nation in safety precautions!

(65,029 posts)...the stores must insist on masks.
I'm seeing what the OP says too. Especially at the indy grocer nearest our house. Less than 50% wearing masks. Less than 20% with gloves.
Our handyman went to Lowe's to buy mulch. They gave him BIG heat over not having a mask. They finally let him go to the garden area, but a manager went and got a 10 pack of wallboarder masks. Told him he had to buy these to get the mulch, and then was told, don't come back without a mask.
At least one store trying be strict.

(2,220 posts)Last week at Kroger during geezer hour, there was a woman who clearly looked like she was either in the middle of or had just finished chemotherapy. She had little hair, looked frail and thin, and was leaning on her cart in the middle of the aisle by the checkout lanes, not wearing a mask. I asked her if she was okay, and she assured me she was. I asked if she was in line, and she said no, that I should go ahead. Then I noticed another woman, also without a mask, putting items in this womans cart, clearly helping her shop.
After a few minutes, Im still in line, and I notice this woman and her friend are in line behind me. I asked her if she would like to go ahead since she had really been in line ahead of me, she had nowhere as much in her cart as I did, and, dammit, I wanted her out of that store and safe. She refused. Oh, no, Im fine, thanks!
Freaked me out for the whole day.

(205,320 posts)I found a gas station with some good ones for a reasonable price ($6.99) last week and got one for myself and two people I know who had makeshift ones. And I told the owner that I'd spread the word that he had masks. I haven't seen them any other place though they're required here in New York, not that I went looking, I go to one store, get what I need and get out.

(46,705 posts)I went to the post office the other day and there was a couple walking out as I was walking in. They looked at me as if I was being foolish taking so much precautions.
And I'll tell you what I hate about those six foot taped marks on the floor in the post office. The guy in front of me did not have a mask on. So each time the line stepped forward, I ended up stepping in his air bubble. Fuck. They need to make these masks mandatory.

(53,776 posts)What I'm puzzled about is how the health experts say the mask is to protect others, by way of the mask layers, from one's exhalations or coughing, etc. But if the mask protects others from one's own exhalations because of the blocking action of the cloth layers, why wouldn't the layers protect the wearer from others exhalations as well?

(5,164 posts), before that I had not been out since March 20 to go to the doctor. I know it is mandated now to wear a mask in a public place in New York. But I see people out walking with no masks, maybe it is not required while youre walking your dog etc. I dont know.
I just got an email from Costco saying that they are reopening to their normal hours soon but it is required that everyone working and shopping wears a mask. I will not be going out since I am contagious with covid right now but I guess if I go out eventually I will see if people are following it or not.
I just wonder what is going to happen when they start reopening everything and if people will actually go out. Is it really worth risking your life to get a haircut, a tattoo, or to go to the mall? I think most people with half a brain are going to say no.

(297,210 posts)That means there are no known active cases on Kauai.
The decline in the threat has many wondering: What now?
Gov. David Ige has extended his stay-at-home order for the state through May 31 and mandated that county mayors go through him for approval before instituting any changes to the restrictions.
Kauai Mayor Derek Kawakami hasnt yet indicated how hed like the island to reopen. But he instituted strict emergency orders early on, including a nighttime curfew, and bristled at the suggestion that Kauai act as a test case for the reboot of the tourism industry.
As always, we must proceed with cautious optimism, Kawakami said, in a Facebook update Tuesday.
There is no doubt that we will see more cases of COVID-19 on Kauai at some point.

Headed for the meat rack in the back of the store and not halfway down a one way only isle and I hear someone raging. At like 100 decibels. Im 50 feet away and can hear him. Talking about Americans being soft and this virus a big hoax and Iran, China and so on. Wondering WTF. Got to the meat counter and see this big guy in his 60s or so raging away at a Publix associate stocking the meat looking like he is biting his tongue. Which Im sure he was. Went to look for meat and made eye contact with the asshole. But of course he said nothing to me. Just scowled. Probably knew had he addressed me I would have told him to fuck off. Which I would have. My mask would have told him. Plus, Im a big enough guy in my early 50s.
Just reinforced to me. These people are fucking cowards. And cowards always need to look tough. Dad taught me that when I was 9.

It's not as though you can just purchase them at Target.
The only reason I have masks is that My Sister Who Sews has been making them and graciously mailed me six. Alas, they were all too big to fit. Lucky me, I have a friend with a sewing machine who was able to re-sew them so they fit. I of course gave her and her daughter masks.
But they are not they easy to come by these days.

(26,076 posts)You do know that many folks with certain conditions CANNOT wear a mask without risk, right? It can actually put them in the hospital or literally even kill them, if they wear it too long. My BIL is one of those. Wearing one can kill him. He has my sister to buy their food and run to the pharmacy, etc., but many people don't have anyone to help them, especially older people.
This is literally no different then seeing someone with an invisible disability park in the handicap space and being snarky to them. Which happens to the same BIL constantly. He has had a COP threaten to arrest him, and he has disabled veteran plates on his car, but because he looks able bodied, people judge him.
So, stop judging these people. You have no idea why they aren't wearing masks. Many, many, MANY, especially older folks, probably have a legitimate reason. Instead, be judgmental of the folks in masks and gloves who touch every damned thing and put it back on the shelves, and who stand six inches from you because they have on a mask.
