My neighbor is one and he now made friend on Facebook so our local militia has grown to three my neighbor his son and their friend . Several weeks ago I was out walking and I stopped and talked with them as they were heading out to get some range time.
My observations
Their well supplied on flags my neighbor flys
American flag
Rebel flag on his flag pole
A trump pence 2020 flag on his porch
Fatigues yes they had on camo fatigues with boonie soft hat not sure why you have to wear fatigues as civilian I dont think it helps with marksmanship. Speaking from experience I knew some dudes that couldnt hit H20 standing three feet away in fatigues.
Battle rattle they all have AR- 15 problem here is they only have five twenty round magazines between the three of them. So any suppression fire is gonna be lacking. Me personally I always preferred thirty round magazines and made sure my people carried them as well. Yes I was a spray and pray type with my M-16 put out rounds.
Personal gear two of them had web gear with the web suspenders one just had web belt. And between the three of them they have three ammo pouches and one canteen. As for rations the Mrs militia packed them sandwiches for their cooler. Our Newfie was sniffing the cooler his tail was wagging hey how about hooking a Newfie up fellas.
Personally Im not that impressed and I think these three. Would have a hard time holding off a ground attack by a platoon of Girl Scouts. None of them has ever served this republic so its like kids playing soldier when we were young.
No command and control, no support, no recon. No experience or tactical knowledge and no discipline.
Was on recon sniffing the cooler
I'd rather have that dog on my side than any of those militia guys

Yes, I'm sure some did in fact serve in the military many maybe with distinction. But to now threaten others with weapons of war to gain ground in a political dispute is not the way to win or to change minds.

(13,582 posts)They aren't militia guys as far as I know. I saw three of them loading up to go hunting, all piling into a mid sized car. All of them were decked out head to toe in what I would assume was fairly expensive camo gear.
This is amusing to me because in the limited hunting I did around here when I was younger, the guys would have laughed their asses off if I would have shown up dressed like that! I think the only clothing item I even owned specifically for hunting was a blaze orange hat and a vest for bird hunting. I went a few time literally in my school clothes because we went out right from school.
I'd bet none of these guys have any money and they get them to think they need all that for deer around here. As long as it's not flashing neon, it makes no difference what you wear.

(127 posts)I rarely see them except border "militia" and wannabes at gun shows. Most of us are used to open carry, but the camo is annoying. One thing I always wondered about, is their assumptions that "libs" are unarmed chickenshits. Just because we do not see a need to holster up a leg does not mean we are not carrying concealed. My father, uncle and several family members were and are law enforcement. I learned to shoot at 7yrs old, and have worked in law enforcement as administrative support. I held my own on the range with them when they took me along as they practiced for qualifications. I doubt camo crew could do so.

(3,056 posts)BIG hunting community. Solid red. (In fact, at the caucus, I was surprised we had that many Democrats!) The gun department in our Ace Hardware is the equivalent of a local bar...it's where folks gather. I've never seen anyone up here open carry. In fact, the only time I've even seen the guns racks full is during hunting season. Down in Vegas...not uncommon to see some doofus open carrying. Including my nephew.
But this jumped out at me in your post, and I think it may be one of the reasons.
The same holds here...these kids are out target shooting as children. They get their own "child size" rifle. They're taught everything about guns, including how dangerous they can be when used wrong, and most importantly, to respect that danger. They're never, at any time, ever allowed to consider a gun as a toy. I've been out here 21 years, and there has never been a child killing someone because they found dad's gun and didn't know what it could do. And when they're old enough, they go hunting with Dad and, very often, Mom.
"Camo crews" (we need to get that started in describing these wannabe's) are too gutless to actually join the military or police departments...and they're probably too dumb to qualify. I mean, they're not going to put themselves in a situation where someone could actually shoot back. They'll undoubtedly take out an innocent bystander at a convenience store someday trying to stop that guy boosting the store.

If Im a legislator or a staff member and I see some bozo walking around the Capitol with a gun, I would be rightfully freaking out.

But yes, it goes towards making you look like a "tough guy"; which to them is more important than actually being prepared to defend yourself

(14,531 posts)MY GS is now a Major in the US Army. Not a one of those men you describe could outshoot her, beat her in hand to hand combat or beat her in a 1 mile race. The only reason I say 1 mile is because they couldn't finish a 10 mile race with a 40+ LB. rucksack. Any actual soldier that I have met would never wear their cammo outside of work. Well, sometimes they do. Like when they're grabbing a bite to eat or grocery shopping on their way home.

(34,376 posts)just overgrown kids playing Army. Just what I've observed. The woods in northern Michigan are full of them. And there's usually a 6-pack in the cooler that Mrs. Militia packs for them. Just hit the deck until their clips run out and we'll be fine. Oh, and they seem to forget that not all of us "libs" are pacifists. They'd get a big surprise if they came after me. My daddy taught me to shoot when I was 8. And I don't drink so my aim is better. And I've always remembered my dad's (who was a cop for 30 years & a Marine Raider) #1 lesson to me: "Don't be afraid to hurt someone who's trying to hurt you." He was afraid that girls were conditioned by society to be too meek and he wasn't going to let that happen to his little girl.
They really are a most pathetic lot. Have a good day and stay safe, my friend.

(4,473 posts)We lurps didn't go in for "spray and pray" firing, basically because we had to make our ammunition last at least a week, and it might be even two. I was given a team to command because I was a Ranger qualified lieutenant.
Anyway, I agree with you. The militia types I've seen are playing soldier. I was speaking with one once, and he told me that they were training to "defend the homeland" and he considered himself to be a solid infantry commander. So I asked him what METT-T and SALUTE meant. He didn't know.
I realize that there might be one or two of you who have forgotten or possibly never learnt those acronyms. METT-T is used in planning an infantry patrol. You must consider the Mission, Enemy, Terrain, Troops & Time Available. SALUTE is what you report when coming in contact with the enemy: Size, Activity, Location, Unit, Time, and Equipment. These two are essential things for any infantry patrol leader to know.

(1,370 posts)Rosco Armstrong here, 26 years Army 4 overseas tours. 39/40 with M4 or M16. Never owned my own weapon, don't wear camo, they're all in duffle bags down in the basement. I have my duffels and one of my dad's from Viet Nam.
I'm embarrassed by these patriot avenger types to no end. I'm not sure which is worse, those who have served and act like this or those who have never served. Both are... sad but dangerous. As has been said, individually they are idiots but together they can be a mob.

(575 posts)Did they have ammo on their person in the legislature?
If so is it not illegal to have a firearm and ammo at hand in public sans a hunting lic.
The reason I ask is that I had a good friend in Mi. who faced felony charges for having a pistol in his car seat with a loaded clip in the console.
He managed to get it reduced to a mistamener and was fined for it. This was about 35 years back.

(12,374 posts)Before I begin, C.A.P. is a great organization. When I was teaching in Jersey City, there was/probably still is a flight in our school.
So anyways, I was 15 and we were having an invasion drill. Now, this was the time that John Birch Society was flogging that there were commies in every community. "I Led Three Lives" was a popular book, later made into a tv show. The shit Herbert A. Philbrick did on tv was little related to real live, but the show was fun.
In my town, a schoolmate's father was arrested as a commie spy, along with a couple of other people in the Newark, N.J. area. In other words, the shit was real.
So back to the invasion drill. We met at the school around sundown and were driven to several important sites to practice protecting them when the Ruskies invaded. My site was the local water pumping plant. This was before Abbie Hoffman announced his plan to put free LSD in the Chicago water system supply.
Around 6:00 my fellow cadet and I were dropped off at the pumping station with nothing but a flashlight. The station operator - guard or whatever he was asked what we were doing. Our explanation of our duty was met with the equivalent of a "Whatever."
About an hour later, we were picked up and taken back to base. Our mission was a success. The water pumping station was secure. In fact, it is still secure to this day.
It wasn't until 9/11 that this episode in my young life flashed back. The pumping station is now fenced in. Audubon people with binoculars and sneakers used to be allowed onto the property. Now, even they are considered a security threat and are not allowed onto the water company property.
So, after 9/11, I was left to wonder, what was a 95 pound kid, in U.S.A.F. fatigues and a flashlight gonna do to protect Springfield, N.J.'s water supplies from the damn commies?
Then, I remember. The answer came in the movie, "Wolverines."
