who understands what is going on. Loeffler's name is not there. I found an article about her name being removed by the legislation...what a shit show. There has been no information from the Democratic Party. Georgia does not do party affiliation. I remember it was very tough to organize anything there. The directions with the ballot say vote for one candidate. But sis is totally confused and I have never seen such a ballot help from Georgia Duer's please. Could they end up with only Republicans running in a runoff? Also, how many will be in the runoff- top two candidates? Also, how do we field a candidate to run against Loeffler as her name is not there...only Sonny's seat on this ballot? Thanks in advance!

(96,882 posts)...therefore a special election will be held in conjunction with the next Federal Election (November). Per GA law, ALL candidates who make it on the ballot will run together, regardless of Party. Broadly speaking there will be two Republicans (Loeffler and Congressman Doug Collins) and two Democrats (Matt Lieberman son of Joe and Raphael Warnock, who has the Partys support). If no candidate gets 50%, there will be a later runoff between the top two candidates.

(71,036 posts)works, we never had this when I lived there...seems like a desperate attempt to retain power by the GOP.

(47,500 posts)Unfortunately, that monster Doug Collins will probably win. Warnock will more than likely be his opponent, and has chance, but nothing like Abrams or Yaters would have had IMHO. Loeffler is toast, and will be lucky to avoid prison (hopefully she is prosecuted and convicted.)
Declined
Stacey Abrams, nominee for Governor of Georgia in 2018 and former minority leader of the Georgia House of Representatives (endorsed Raphael Warnock)
Sally Yates, former United States Deputy Attorney General <<<<< wish to hell she had run, as Abrams did not
Jason Carter, nominee for Governor of Georgia in 2014, former state senator, and grandson of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter (endorsed Raphael Warnock)
Keisha Lance Bottoms, mayor of Atlanta
Stacey Evans, candidate for Governor of Georgia in 2018 and former state representative (running for state house)
Kasim Reed, former mayor of Atlanta
Jen Jordan, state senator
Michelle Nunn, CEO of CARE USA and nominee for U.S. Senate in 2014
Sherry Boston, DeKalb County District Attorney
Mike Thurmond, DeKalb County chief executive, former Labor Commissioner of Georgia, and nominee for U.S. Senate in 2010
Nikema Williams, state senator and Chair of the Georgia Democratic Party
then you have the top 3 ones left, all of whom are running for the other Senate seat against the weaker David Perdue
Jon Ossoff, documentary filmmaker and nominee for Georgia's 6th congressional district in 2017 (running for Class 2 seat)
Teresa Tomlinson, former mayor of Columbus (running for Class 2 seat)
Sarah Riggs Amico, nominee for Lieutenant Governor of Georgia in 2018 (running for Class 2 seat)
hopefully one of them can beat that POS Perdue
and finally, you also one who declined but is running for re-election in the US House (smart move)
Lucy McBath, incumbent U.S. Representative for Georgia's 6th congressional district (running for re-election in the House)
In a perfect world, Abrams would have run against Perdue and Yates against Collins. Abrams is banking on being the VP (for which I 100% think she is the best pick) but I do not think Biden is going to go for her. I think she relishes a re-match against Kemp for Governor if she is not picked as the VP.

What in the world is a jungle primary, and whats in store for Georgias?
Two powerful Republicans and two influential Democrats are vying for the seat once held by former U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson
BY SEAN KEENAN - MARCH 20, 2020
<snip>
Amid the elections on the ballot this November, Georgia voters will be faced with one peculiar contest. Called a jungle primary or a nonpartisan blanket primary, the election would determine who gets to claimor keepthe U.S. Senate seat vacated by Republican Johnny Isakson at the end of 2019.
Essentially, a jungle primary is an election sans primarysomething of a battle royale. The unorthodox modelonly Louisiana has fully embraced it, although other states have used it, tooallows any candidate who pays their filing fees to duke it out in a race for elected office. In Georgias case, there are four major candidates: two Republicans and two Democrats.
<snip>
Loeffler and Collins, both white, are competing against two prominent black Democrats. In late January, the Rev. Raphael Warnock, senior pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church, became the first Democrat to enter the race. Warnock has no political experience but boasts name recognition due to his religious influence in metro Atlanta and beyondhe led the prayer service at former President Barack Obamas second inaugurationand was mentioned as a potential opponent in 2016, when Isakson last ran for office. Warnock claimed the support of Stacey Abrams almost immediately.
And on February 20, Ed Tarver declared his candidacy. A former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia under Obama and an ex-state senator representing Augusta in the 2000s, Tarver brings with him political experience, but perhaps not the same popularity as Warnock, Bullock says. Outside of the Augusta area and politically involved circles, Tarver might be considered an unknown.

(2,343 posts)Like CA, elsewhere, no way. In a place like GA, the Democratic Party will be neutered in statewide elections.
I'm good with ranked choice, though.
And I'm definitely for a mail-in ballot being mailed to every registered voter.

(31,261 posts)strongest democrats are.
My guess is it will come down to a democrat and a republican in the General. Seldom does that not happen, the exception is when one of the parties field a slate of weak candidates.
Demsrule86
(71,036 posts)I hope it does come down to a Democrat and a Republican because the Democratic vote is split and I could see it coming down to two Republicans. Too many Democrats running...this could blow our shot at retaking the senate.
