For A.O.C., 'Existential Crises' as Her District Becomes the Coronavirus Epicenter

The dash to overnight millennial celebrity can take abrupt detours.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the democratic socialist from the Bronx, was propelled from an anonymous existence as a bartender after her upset victory in 2018 straight onto magazine covers, late-night TV and the top of every partisan love-hate list in America. It made her perhaps the most exposed and fixated-on House freshman in history.

Today, the youngest woman ever elected to Congress — known simply as A.O.C. — owns another distinction, this one far grimmer: She represents the nation’s most devastated hot zone of the coronavirus outbreak.

New York’s 14th Congressional District, which includes the working-class immigrant clusters of the Bronx and Queens, has had 19,200 coronavirus cases as of April 30, more than all of Manhattan, despite having almost a million fewer people. Residents of the neighborhoods of Corona and North Corona in her district — the names are an eerie coincidence — have had more coronavirus cases than any ZIP code in the country.

Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, 30, knows many who have died, as well as others who were sickened with the virus, or left hungry or jobless. She sends notes and makes calls to as many surviving family members as she can, serving as a kind of legislative first responder. But it can be hard to keep up.

Never in my life have I been so excited by a political figure as I have become in knowing this young dynamo.

Such passion is hard to find.

Do you know what this young lady is capable of doing or do you just want to dismiss a lifelong progressive's (me) point of view?

Me.

and often find myself in admiration of many of them and I don't know just what you're referring to when you say she is capable of what? I do know for example, that for the longest time her constituents couldn't get an answer from her because she hadn't set up a proper district office, couldn't reach anyone on the phone and their only access was by email. The article states she is/was alone in her office so maybe she has finally set it up. She always had the means to do so as members are given a couple of million each year for space and staffers' salaries. I found her vote against the bill ideological at a time when people are desperate and find no reason to praise her for it.

As for dismissing your point of view, I am certainly free to disagree with it. As far as you being a progressive...there are progressives and there are progressives...those who want to get things done and move forward and, those who are guided by a far far left ideology that is not in the least practical as most of the country isn't and to get something done there will have to be compromise.

Finally, in the article linked one got the sense she was feeling very alone for standing up for sheer ideology. What I took from her vote is that she voted with republicans and followed their lead to deny her fellow citizens aid.

Future candidates should all require a Law degree, preferably Constitutional law along with far more than likes on a social media board.

She has nothing to qualify for leader of the free world as Commander in Chief.

A popularity contest, it better never be again.

Guess we see her quite differently.

There's a loy of me, me, me going on in this article

“Our brains are just designed to experience a lot of excruciating pain at the idea of being alone,” Ms. Ocasio-Cortez said. “When you cast those lonely votes, you feel like your colleagues respect you less, and that you are choosing to marginalize yourself.” It can be difficult to appreciate the “powerful psychology of the House floor,” she said, along with the overall social pressures of Congress."
