Scientists have identified a new strain of the coronavirus that has become dominant worldwide and appears to be more contagious than the versions that spread in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a new study led by scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
The new strain appeared in February in Europe, migrated quickly to the East Coast of the United States and has been the dominant strain across the world since mid-March, the scientists wrote.
In addition to spreading faster, it may make people vulnerable to a second infection after a first bout with the disease, the report warned.
The 33-page report was posted Thursday on BioRxiv, a website that researchers use to share their work before it is peer reviewed, an effort to speed up collaborations with scientists working on COVID-19 vaccines or treatments. That research has been largely based on the genetic sequence of earlier strains and might not be effective against the new one.

I understand though, that it is too cold in winter here and AFAIK, the one and only sighting. I've seen no mention about killer hornets here.
Maybe when Nature gets back to "normal" invasive's like this will naturally die off.

(1,619 posts)the stay at home orders were issued that have gotten better. So called 'opening up' is not a sign of things getting better, just nod from the government that they have enough facilities not to overrun hospitals. But everyday more and more people get sick go to the hospital and some ultimately die.

(2,771 posts)I think the LA Times article about this study does a good job of informing while avoiding sensationalism. I came away with an understanding that the information is new, but that it is being disseminated largely for those researching potential vaccines in the hope those researchers can take into account the new findings.

(5,547 posts)And it is the only thing that really explains why the experiences of places like Spain , Italy and NYC are so different from other places.
I have one major beef with this article is that it is presented as present tense as if this just happened. Even if the study is new, they are talking about a mutation that occurred months ago. It is an explanation of what has already happened but is presented in a headline that communicates an immediate new danger.

(4,636 posts)In part, this is why we dont have vaccines for the cold. Pesky little things keep changing themselves. The problem with SARS-CoV-2 is its far more lethal than the cold, thus the urgency and $$$ being poured into finding a vaccine.
A hope: SARS-CoV-2 mutates again into a less lethal form. Perhaps keeping us coughing and sneezing longer, perhaps resulting in the new virus becoming more successful at spreading. This less lethal form could overrun the other strains and were left with ... a bad common cold.
I can hope, cant I?

(3,282 posts)the seasonal flu we get now is descendant from the same H1N1 that killed millions in the 1928 pandemic.
One way or another CV19 will not be a problem one day, question is when.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)But the last pandemic had the virus mutate into a far more lethal form, the 1918 virus then went on a killing spree.
As I piece together stuff that I am reading, it looks like SARS-COV-2 mutates to a more deadly form while maintaining the same incubation duration (the mutant European strain appears to be deadlier than the strain that came out of Wuhan).

(2,600 posts)who previously had Covid (or have had recent tests that indicated they were previously inflected). The syndrome presents as extreme inflammation of the blood vessels causing fever, low blood pressure and creating problems with the heart. The age range is from about four to fifteen. Since these kids are in the NY or tri-state area, it would seem that they must have been previously infected with the mutant strain of the virus that spread from Europe earlier. They're describing it as being most like Kawasaki Syndrome.

(26,181 posts)Until it is peer-reviewed and more properly vetted, this should be taken with an entire shaker of salt. If something is not acceptable research data for a third-year undergrad paper, then it should not be acceptable for us, either. It is interesting and provocative, and I'm really looking forward to seeing the final peer-reviewed research.

The mutant coronavirus to which it is referring is one that we are already experiencing here NOW. The headline is alarmist & makes it seem like theres a new one. Reading the article makes it clear that there WAS a virus in Europe which mutated to the one we have now in the US. https://t.co/Od42DniJ1D

(33,982 posts)'closing the border' is the only thing he has to lean on as 'proactive' effort.
He didn't close the border to china. He closed the border to Chinese nationals coming from china. The virus doesn't care the nationality of the person carrying it. It's happy to ride along with whomever.
And the prevalent strain causing most of our deaths isn't from China. It's from Europe.

(7,927 posts)...And how often you may be.
Will you be infected after there is a vaccine?
Will you be infected after you've had the vaccine and thus may survive it?
Will you be infected after some fool re-opens your state or your town or your children's school?
Will you be infected after there are reliable, rapid, and available tests so you might have a chance of getting treatment?
Will you be infected after there is reliable treatment available in your local hospital while there are beds and living staff to care for you?
Will you be infected after the Stock market recovers, so you may just be able to pay your medical bills?
Will you be infected after the election? This assumes that they haven't found a way to defer it until the stock market rises again.
