his SOS Alexander Haig stepped in, elbowing the VP out of the way. I think that would be the likely case now, Pompeo pushing his way into the big chair and probably hoping they both have prolonged illnesses.

If they both peg out, then Pelosi gets the job,

GHWB didn't like it and Haig was pilloried in the press when the GOP still pretended to care about things like chain of command back then.

These days, Pompeo would just take over and no one would care except Democrats.

my guess is that Republicans would ask Pence to resign and then name a new, healthy VP. I’ve wondered if naming Ford as VP will come back to bite us. That precedent might stand in the way of Pelosi stepping up in a Constitutionally mandated manner.

Quarantine, in a legal sense, can be imposed by a health authority. No clue who would wield that authority in the case of the POTUS. But there's no law saying it must be. And, if we're talking protocol, guidelines or standards here ... Hello! Trump? And 2) An order of succession would require incapacitation .. and not mere quarantine/isolation.
