If This Were WWII, Pro-Trump Reopeners Would Be Painting Targets on U.S. Roofs

During WWII, the U.S. and Britain would conduct blackout drills during which people had to stay at home, keep their lights turned off, and seek shelter. Air raid wardens would patrol neighborhoods and violators would be cited.

Of course, if this took place now, you might have reopeners shining flashlights into the sky, painting targets on roofs, and the President would be railing against Governors and encouraging people to violate such restrictions. On top of that, you would have people egged on Fox News denying that the U.S. was bombed by Japan or that the Germans had invaded France. They would be arguing that it was hoax concocted by the Democrats. Finally, the folks who would be actively trying to increase the vulnerability of the U.S. and cost U.S. lives would be describing themselves as patriots.

ELLWOOD CITY -- There was a time when sirens sounded, whistles blew and the good citizens of Ellwood City turned out their lights and prepared for an air raid.

In May 1941, the U.S. Office of Civilian Defense was established, as World War II spread across the world, to prepare for possible air raids on the United States. There were blackout drills to prepare the population for what do to in an emergency. Blackout drills were planned in advance and advertised and street lights were turned off at the scheduled time. Anyone outside was to take cover and those inside were instructed to turn out their lights and close their curtains.

Air raid wardens policed the neighborhoods to make sure everyone was complying. By early 1943, there were about six million volunteers who worked to keep America safe from being bombed. The idea was that enemy planes couldn’t target what they couldn’t see.

Many believed Ellwood City was a prime target -- close to the industries of Pittsburgh and Youngstown and the home of the National Tube Company and Aetna Standard, which produced anti-aircraft guns.

Like NY resisted the idea of blackouts. It wasn’t like we were going to be bombed by the nazis. But German U-boats would sit of the coast at night and see the ships coming out of harbor silhouetted against the lit up urban skyline and torpedo them. The Germans called it the Happy Times it was so easy to sink allied shipping.
