You can't on the one hand point out the stupid fucking lies that Donnie Shit for Brains tells by the minute, and then, on the other hand act as if obamagate is a real fucking thing.

(15,330 posts)Sure, I can turn it off.
I guess if I quit hearing about the Coronovirus, it's not really infecting my area.
I've never seen a murder, so that must not be a thing.
Hey, brilliant idea. If I just don't see that Donnie Shit for Brains is president, then he can't have any impact on my country.

(21,337 posts)MSNBC has always done this and I've used this example before.
Fox claims that Obama beats his wife.
CNN says it needs more information.
MSNBC says no he doesn't.
The thing is that they are all talking about Obama beating his wife. MSNBC has always aired right wing narratives just putting a leftist slant to them.
I will watch Don Lemon because of his passion.

(15,330 posts)It's not a real thing.
That's my point. The birth certificate shit got ripped to bits too, but somehow, Americans heard more about that then a hush payment to a pornstar.
This is how the Retrumplicans role. Just giving it ANY airtime on any media other than Faux, OAN and Hate Radio lends it legitimacy.
If the president said clouds were really pipe smoke from God, should legitimate media "examine" whether or not clouds are God smoking?

(21,337 posts)it doesn't bother me. It bothers me that people believe that cable news is progressive.
How many examples do I need to provide? Trump is in the news because he is being sued and asked to provide his DNA to prove he raped someone. How many segments has msnbc aired about that? How many segments has msnbc aired about Joe Biden's accuser?

is a corporate network that puts a so-called leftish spin/veneer on whatever its parent company deems fit to cover.
Challenge the systemic order too much, yer arse gets cashiered there, like Phil Donahue did over the Iraq War or Dylan Ratigan did over the scams and financial rapes that occurred during and after the 2007-2010 financial crisis. Anyone who expects MSNBC to be a shining white knight for truth and justice overall is bound for a massive disappointment. I operate under no such delusions, so I am seldom disappointed by their actions/inactions.

(10,177 posts)has to be reported by "responsible journalists." Trump knows how this works, so he exploits it to his advantage. He also understands a minority of viewers will always hear just the initial reporting, ignoring the follow up clarifications.
Reporters should always preface Trump's lunatic pronouncements with the actual facts, warn viewers beforehand that what they are about to hear is bullshit. After four years of Trump's lies it would be irresponsible to do otherwise.

(21,337 posts)and how many days should Obamagate be debunked on msnbc? That time could be spent talking about Trump's failed response to Covid-19.

(15,330 posts)Do you think people who regularly watch Faux News or listen to Hate Radio are going to say; "hmm, obamagate... let me tune in to MSNBC and CNN, or other legitimate news and see what this is about"?
Then think of the millions that don't watch Faux or listen to Hate Radio. Wow, MSNBC and legitimate news are talking about this... let me Google it to see what it's about.
Go ahead, those of you that say just shut it off. Google obamagate... I fucking dare you.
When whether or not we are going to live in tyranny is decided by a few thousand votes in Dumbfuckistan Murika, you can't just "turn it off" and expect it not to have impact.

(146,308 posts)Most of its programming is not actually news. Most is commentary on the news. The network has a range of hosts and guests who participate in that commentary. Each show is somewhat different, since there are different hosts and guests.
News is straight reporting of events. There's very little of that on MSNBC. So, we have commentary programming.
I watch MSNBC for two hours each day, between 4 and 6 PM EDT. That's it. Both of those hours are commentary, not news. I use my own filter when watching those two programs. I don't use MSNBC for news broadcasts. Instead, I watch one of the three broadcast networks for news. Most often it's CBS, which is on in my house at 7 AM CDT and at 5:30 PM CDT. It's pretty much straight reporting, which is how I prefer getting news.
MSNBC is what it is. There are hosts on that network I won't watch at all. Hugh Hewitt, for example. There are guests on the shows I do watch who I don't care for. There are hosts on that network I don't care for.
But, MSNBC is not news. It is commentary on the news. Because of that, I expect to hear commentary with which I disagree. That's fine with me, since I am able to think for myself and do not rely on television commentators to form my opinions for me.
My suggestion that you just shut it off if you don't like it is made because you are labeling the entire network's programming as wrong. It is not. Some of it slants in one way or another, but that's the nature of commentary on the news. I'm perfectly capable of listening to commentary with which I disagree. I judge it based on my own knowledge of the events of the day.
MSNBC IS NOT NEWS! I don't watch it for news. I watch it for its varying commentary on the news. If you only want to hear what you like to hear, you may have to turn MSNBC off.

(10,177 posts)Reacting strongly, complaining publicly, posting on social media and demanding change from corporate media is the only solution. The more people bring this sort of thing to their attention, the greater the chance it will change. It's the only reason some media outlets are even using the word "lie" these days in relation to Trump's bullshit pronouncements.

(6,280 posts)By saying MSNBC sucks, a person is saying that Rachel Maddow sucks, Joy Reid sucks, Lawrence O'Donnell sucks, Nicole Wallace sucks, and so on. What is with this wholesale broad blanket syndrome that infects Democratic Underground? The networks are not the only victims of this bullshit. There are several entities and geographic regions that are victims of this crap. If one person pisses someone off, they should say that. Why condemn an entire organization over one's dissatisfaction with one or two people?

(10,177 posts)certain journalistic standards. All real newspapers followed these guidelines and most of them still do, but cable tv news is different.
The first paragraph to a "news" article was always of particular importance since most readers seldom read past the first or second paragraphs of any story. The opening paragraph was supposed to contain just the pertinent facts, the classic "5 Ws and the H": who, what, when, where, why and how. Nothing more, nothing less. The "lede" is supposed to tell a reader only what the story is about - just the facts - then invites them to read further, for additional analysis and context.
Cable news always begins every story with their typical breathless "Breaking News!" bullshit hype: "Trump accuses Obama of committing the greatest crime in the history of the world!" They usually follow that statement with a video clip of Trump saying the same thing.
After putting that lie out there, some media sources will start getting into the real facts of the story and providing analysis. However, even reports that do provide clarification and context, fail to provide this important information in the opening "paragraph," where it should be.
