37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?
38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?
39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?
40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen."

(35,300 posts)do good works and help the poor to keep it to yourself--to not even let one hand know what the other is doing.
And to not judge others.
Know of anybody--I don't care what color they claim for their politics--trumpeting how they help the poor and condemning others for not being as righteous?
The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector..
For "unjust" read "people in the other party".
The quote doesn't quite work, because today's Pharisee doesn't stand by himself. He's surrounded by a Greek chorus praising him (or her) for being so right and putting the other people in their place.

(35,300 posts)When a man from each family in each tribe was to present himself--in public--at the Temple and make an offering for his family.
The first day of unleavened bread (now "the first day of Passover" was another such day, and was the reason for Passover being such a big deal in Jerusalem.
Public prayer was a common thing before the destruction of the Temple and in the early church. The purpose, one would assume, was not to be seen but to be.

I'll give it a 25% chance that it was somebody connected with the church, which was the case with many of the African-American churches that burned in the '90s. But fear and hatred are closely linked, and there are a lot of scared people. Some of it's reasonable, some's whipped up by the press and politicians and bloggers.
