A white woman has been charged with assault after grabbing an 11-year-old black girl's arm and

accusing her of stealing mail

A woman in South Carolina who accused an 11-year-old black girl of stealing her mail is now facing assault and battery charges over the incident.

The Aiken Department of Public Safety has charged Elizabeth Shirey, 38, with third-degree assault and battery over a May 11 incident in which officials say the woman grabbed 11-year-old Skhylur Davis.

Skhylur was picking up the mail at her grandmother's home in Aiken, South Carolina, on May 11 when she was approached by Shirey, who demanded the girl hand over the mail, according to an incident report seen by CNN.

Skhylur told the Department of Public Safety that she told Shirey that the mail was her grandmother's. She said Shirey then grabbed her arms and tried to take the mail before realizing it wasn't addressed to her.

May 2020

This is a crazy story. Why would Elizabeth Shirey think Skhylur Davis was stealing her mail when Skhylur was getting the mail from a house/mailbox that did not belong to Shirey? I realize the news article stated that Skhylur was near Shirey's mailbox, but that seems to show that the mailboxes were just near each other. Shirey should have just assumed that Skhylur was just getting mail for the home of the other box.

It's a pejorative that nobody really knows the origin of, though 3 contenders are Karen Hill in Goodfellas from 1989, Karen in Mean Girls (Oh my god Karen, you can't ask someone why they're white) from 2003, and a Dane Cook set from 2004 "Every group has a Karen and she is always a bag of douche".

On edit: The male equivalent, though I don't know the reason, is Chad.

Karen is the label for self entitled middle age white women who whine, bitch and moan when life doesn't go exactly the way they want it.
They routinely harass and insult everyone they think they have power over -- like children, minority children preferred, also store clerks.
They're easily identified by too much gold jewelry, knock off Gucci handbags and bortoxed within an inch of their lives.
Even before you see them, you can hear them: "I demand to see the manager!" "I'm calling the authorities!"
They give their gender, race and religions a bad name.

I defend groups of people who get painted with the same brush. Kinda why I'm a Democrat.

"Karen", "Becky", "Susan", mostly a sneering way to refer to female boomers. Also I hate "Boomer", "GenXer", whatever. It's much the same as lumping together groups of people by stupid concepts like skin color or sexuality, only this is age and gender.

I'm old, but I hate it just as much when people attack younger generations. It's not ever good to judge groups of people. We're all individuals.

Though it does occur to me now that I'm being super grumpy. One of my bff Karen's died a year ago yesterday, of cancer. I guess I'm still grieving. I'm still defending the name though.

Would you feel it was still enough if the woman was an asymptomatic carrier of Covid 19 and the girl's grandmother ended up infected because of it.

Just to point out that at this time people need to be aware of their actions and take exceptional care not to touch someone else, especially without their permission, during a pandemic. Her rude behavior in 2019 now becomes a potentially threatening action in 2020.

I am sure there are a lot of folks in jail who apologized.

I doubt this woman will get much punishment, but it is important to establish that this was an assault. We need to impress upon people that they can't just grab others, that grabbing people is a crime.

Ever. If she felt bad enough to apologize then she should have never done it in the first place.

It’s actually not hard at all not to assault children. Or anyone else for that matter.

When people who think it’s OK one minute to assault children suddenly realize THEY are in trouble it’s amazing how quickly they try to convince others that they’re innocent.
