General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI've been really puzzled about this ever since his appearance at one of Trump's "briefings"
and I'm currently being deluged with his commercials on television.
Why, exactly, was the My Pillow Guy invited to speak at a Corona virus briefing?
Did he have anything of worth to share?
I try not to watch them and get second hand info about them here.
But I don't remember many discussions about that guy's appearance.

I don't like listening to music when I drive, and NPR talk has ended long before I head home - so conservative talk radio is about the only game in town. He's been a mainstay advertiser on pretty much every show I've had the "pleasure" of listening to - and often gets special call-outs from the host.
He's not nothing worthwhile to share - aside from money and a shady history of the kind that seems to be attractive to conservative talk show idiots and trump.

(7,411 posts)There's no excuse for listening to something you don't like these days. And indulging in something besides politics occasionally, like science or art would probably do wonders for perspective and tension.

(34,069 posts)Better to know the nonsense than to get blindsided by it - especially when it starts getting repeated by liberals
You'd be surprised how many right-wing ideas are spun slightly and spouted by liberals who often have no idea where the concept started.
One I specifically recall was a suggestion that recognizing same gender marriage would force churches to marry same gender couples. That started on right wing talk shows, and after careful framing it was marketed to progressives who like the idea of more separation of church and state as if we don't want them trying to interfere with the law, then we shouldn't impose same gender marriage on them.
My jaw nearly hit the floor when I heard my progressive friends spouting right wing nonsense that they did not realize was right wing nonsense. It's pretty easily disputed - the law permitting remarriage after divorce doesn't force Catholics to marry a catholic who was previously divorced. So it was ludicrous to suggest that a law permitting same gender marriage would force churches to perform them.
Not the first time. Not the only time. ("Illegals" is another concept that they have really inserted into far too many liberal dialogues, in a variety of ways. We don't fear monger with with the concept, but they have perverted the dialog enough that far too many liberals have little concept of how complex the reality of immigration really is - and far too often we join the conservatives in condemning people who don't wait in the immigration line, are unaware that most undocumented immigrants pay taxes way out of proportion to their income - in large part because most can never receive social security even if they have contributed their entire working lives.)
Conservatives are masters at subversive dialog. It's much more recognizable and easy to counter when you hear it directly from them before they spin it into something they can convince progressives to spout.
And - I'm not asking questions about who this "My Pillow" guy is, since I've been aware of him for 3-4 years, at least.
If all we ever do is listen to an echo chamber, nothing is ever going to change.
That said, a former student gifted me with enough money to buy a Kindle Fire. Since I can make it read me books even when the radios all switch to music, I haven't listened to any talk shows (of any flavor) since August.

(869 posts)These are morally bankrupt, stupid, evil people.
What you wrote was a rationalization for tolerating evil and stupidity as it relates to conservative talk radio. It's appropriate to reject evil, and not attribute "skill" or "mastery" to it.
"Conservatives are masters at subversive dialog."
BULLSHIT.
They're masters at racism. Period. End of story.
Pass.

(34,069 posts)Both of which were spouted to me by several progressives who had no idea where the idea originated - long after they showed up in conservative land, in a much more recognizably bigoted form. They truly believed they were offering a progressive solution - one which I had to expend considerable time debunking with several progressive friends (a task I was better prepared for becuase I knew exactly where it came from.)
So are you saying liberals are just dumb that we will spout whatever the dumber conservatives give us as an earworm? Because either they are very good at spin, or we're really stupid. There's really no other alternative for the phenomenon I've observed happening over and over, and we're much better off if we know what to expect so we can more effectively counter it - AND - point them to the conservative source for what they are saying.

(31,893 posts)In case you didn't already know, he's a big ass trump supporter.
Anyway, the reason he was at that briefing was because he was making a public pledge to dear leader that he was going to convert his pillow making factory to making protective masks to help with the Covid-19 pandemic.
Only (surprise, surprise) that never happened. The excuse given was that he didn't have the correct fabric so he was looking for a manufacturer to whom he could outsource the mask-making. (no, it didn't make any sense to me, either)
I'm pretty sure no masks were ever made for which he could claim any sort of responsibility, otherwise you could bet he'd be all over the airways taking credit and bragging about it.

(9,954 posts)... he got in some trouble for claiming medicinal benefits from sleeping on his "My Pillow" pillow. It's machine washable, yes, but you can't say the pillow cures a headache. The salesman wears a glittering Christian cross and advertises stuff made in Biblical lands. He is beloved among some right-wingers.
