...in the same manner he sings his greatest hits in concert when the venue is too small for him and he doesn't feel it.

Saw he and Merle several years ago and had great seats. Merle tried to put on a decent show but Bob rage-sang all his tunes at double speed like he was saying "here, choke on Tangled Up you fools in this arena".

It was my second and last Dylan show. I dont listen to too much of his work either anymore.

...I loved it, the audience loved it.

Took a couple of minutes, but it wasn't just a game. He tweaked his repitoire and sped it up like Willie Nelson did at almost every show I attended. The crowd was a bit confused at first, but started roaring their approval, eliciting one of the biggest grins I've ever seen from Bob. It was sort of brilliant, really, and allowed him, just like Nelson, to get more songs out in the relatively short time we had with him. Baltimore Civic Arena, btw.
