On Chris Hayes a few minutes ago, in the discussion about the likelihood of a vaccine, there was a really short little glimpse of a guy about to take a COVID test. His face was drawn and tight and I couldn't tell whether he was in pain, scared, or about to cry, but it really got my attention in a way that all the talking, over the past couple of months, hasn't. My mirror neurons fired and I felt a little bit of his suffering.
This is by far the more common consequence of COVID-19 infection--not death, but fear and suffering. People feel wretched, but that doesn't really make the news; it's either "cases" or "deaths," and "deaths" is such a (relatively) small proportion of "cases" that it's easy to see how people dismiss the seriousness of getting infected.
I know the media can't show pictures of people dying, but with their permission, could they replay Facetime video of people who are hospitalized and struggling to breathe? Not to be voyeuristic but to show, with pictures that a thousand words couldn't match, that this is a really, really horrible ordeal for a lot of people who get infected and get ill but don't die.
