His antics during the debates sank him. Most Americans didn't want to vote for a ticket that didn't seem to take their job seriously.

9. I remember the pundits immediately saying that McCain had won the debates

until the after-debate polls rolled in showing Obama had cleaned his clock, and then watching the pundits confused looks as they realized that they had no idea what the American public thought or how it viewed things.

20. A town hall format debate, when Obama stayed poised and civil as McCain....

bordered on the disrespectful, including calling Obama 'that one', without actually looking at him. (I think he motioned over his shoulder at that point, to where Obama was sitting behind him.)
