CNN: A sudden jump in infections could lead to a 'second peak'

(CNN) - Coronavirus will surge again when summer ends; infectious disease experts are almost certain of that. But they don't know how severe that resurgence will be.

The World Health Organization offered one bleak hypothesis for what the next few months of coronavirus could look like. While we're still living through the first wave of the pandemic, and cases are still rising, infections could jump up suddenly and significantly "at any time."

"We may get a second peak in this way," said Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of WHO's Health Emergencies Programme on Monday.

A second peak wouldn't unfold as neatly or gradually as a wave. A new peak would mean a sudden spike in cases, which could overburden health care systems again and possibly cause a greater number of deaths. The second peak could be worse than the first.

Folks, I hate to say it, but I don't think the "First Wave" is anywhere near over. Midnight Writer May 2020 #2

Looks like the states that opened on May 1 are being lit up now, hospitalizations up by 40%. I wish uponit7771 May 2020 #3

You know damn well this is a 99.9999999% certainty.

We've seen the pictures and video, there is definitely a spike on the way, thank all the morons!

4-5 weeks later, around the 4th of July.... and then you know so well how people will clusterfuck themselves on that day!

So 4-5 weeks after that in middle of August, oh wow who could have seen THIS coming?

DUH!

Super dooper dippity do DUH!

Wave or spike hair splitting is a dumb thing to argue about, get people what they need to save as many as possible, nothing else really is worth much?

Leaders are corrupt and worse than useless some of them.

1/21/21 can't get here soon enough.

In my rural county, cases and deaths have increased five fold in the last two weeks.

So, of course, now is the time we decide to "open up".

Logic has left the building.

... I had the chart but my source is CNBC in the morning.

They show when the state opened, increase in infections week over week and increase in hospitalizations week over week and testing increase (which doesn't mean anything without the positive rate number)
