(95,247 posts)There is little doubt a goodly portion of the provocateurs are klu klux types, in modern iterations....

(12,375 posts)but it's Ku Klux Klan.
Where the fuck they came up with that ridiculous name is beyond me.

(16,845 posts)which is Greek for "circle." The Klan part is the same as clan. That's what I've always heard, anyway.

(16,845 posts)It's funny that they use a Greek word as part of their name. That group might have more members who are illiterate sons of bitches than any other organisation on Earth.
The Magistrate
(95,247 posts)That the name derives from the sound of cocking and firing a repeating rifle of the period. Am not certain I believe this, but the tale has a certain ring to it which makes me want to. The founder, Nathan Bedford Forrest, is best remembered as the officer in charge at the Fort Pillow massacre late in the Civil War, when Negro soldiers of a Union force overcome in battle were murdered after surrender. He was not a particularly literate man, and his report on the matter reads 'We busted the fort about niner clock and the niggers skedadled. My men is a killin em in the woods.' One of the immortal quotes of American history, in my view, and worth unexpurgated presentation.
