(17,167 posts)Are you using an older version of Windows combined with an older browser?
No way will I insist that you update, but can only tell you my experience. I hung onto XP for a dozen years after it became defunct. Main reason was I thought Vista, Win7 and 8/8.1 were not good OSs. Yeah, I know the attachment to Win 7, but I never liked it. I also use many old and obscure 'one function' programs that I was reluctant to have stop working.
If the migration to Win10 and an updated browser is your problem, let me reassure you that it's not as bad as you imagine. There are certain tweaks you can make that will make your computer recognisable again. I'm happy to walk you through them.
PM me and I'll even provide references.
Denzil_DC
(7,242 posts)and using the last XP-supported release of Firefox. (I have a newer laptop that runs Windows 10, but still use my old one quite often.)
I mention this because an operating system update is likely a red herring here, desirable as it might be for other reasons.
More likely supects would be, as you say, browser version, and particularly any blocking add-ons. For example, I use Ghostery on both my XP and W10 laptops (invaluable in speeding up Internet use as it blocks ads etc. that can often be slow to load and stop a whole page displaying). I did have problems ages ago with Ghostery blocking the display of tweets on DU, but it was easily solved by whitelisting a social media button in the settings.
I do habitually paste the text and any pastable images when I post tweets. Then someone occasionally complains, "Why is the same text repeated, IT'S ANNOYING," so there's no satisfying everybody!
Doing this is a good idea anyway, as tweets are sometimes deleted, so at least we have a record of what was posted if that happens.
Also, sometimes Twitter is temporarily unavailable, in which case all you'll see is "Link to Tweet" until the problem clears. That may confuse the situation when folks are trying to troubleshoot.

(90,714 posts)The current one has been useful and fun -- years ago I got the Mini so I could travel with it & ended up using it exclusively -- but of late has refused to load any new apps. For instance, NextDoor upgraded and now I can't get in to check on local bulletins from County Health Dept and such. I wanted to try Insta-Cart and same thing. Wanted to get a robot vacuum cleaner -- and it won't work without the app, which won't download. And it really doesn't like Twitter.
I gave up and finally got a new device, a full-size iPad, which has something like 10 times the memory of the old one. We'll set it up this weekend.
But my emotional problem with Twitter is unlikely to go away. Sure, I get a little charge out of some comment or other repeated here, but I have no intention of reading a million Tweet-replies or following anyone. It's too much like being a lab rat pressing a lever for a pellet.
I'm already addicted to DU, so to speak. I check it first thing in the morning, and last at night. But DU is a discussion board. We come here to discuss -- we traffic in complete sentences and thoughts. I want to know what my friends think. Oh, and George Takei, as long as his comment is pasted into your post.
Rant off.
Many Thanks for the offer to help, by the way. I tend to cling to old technology until forced to change.

TO post tweets, click on the specific tweet within the twitter STREAM, go to the URL line and copy and paste the entire url address. IF (important) the twitter address includes the word "mobile," edit to delete that word out of the address. VOILA. It works.

(7,242 posts)What hardware are you using to access DU?
Are you accessing it from your home Internet connection, a work connection, or in some other way (e.g. via mobile phone)?
What operating system?
What browser?
Are you running any plugins or other add-ons within that browser? If so, one of these may have updated in the background and you may need to change its settings to see tweets on DU.
Can you see tweets on other websites?
For example, Balloon Juice usually has a number of tweets embedded in the posts on its front page: can you see the tweets there? - https://www.balloon-juice.com/

(1,206 posts)I can't see the tweets anymore on my 2013 MacBookPro running Chrome (which can't be updated anymore and Firefox won't even run), but they display just fine on my powerhouse MacPro and newer MacBookPro.
Funny where snippy blame is placed sometimes.
Denzil_DC
(7,242 posts)I can see DU tweets just fine on my ancient Dell Inspiron 6400 running Windows XP and a very old (and no longer supported) version of Firefox.
I've never used Chrome (nor owned, though I've used occasionally, a Mac), so in your case, that could be the problem.
HotTeaBag
(1,206 posts)As I said, the same tweets that don't appear on my older, un-updatable to another browser Mac appear perfectly fine and functional on my other Macs that are much, much newer.
Either way, I couldn't care less half the time if I see a Tweet or not.
Hermit-The-Prog
(33,349 posts)It's not the age of the computer or browser; it's changes being made by twitter.
The likelihood is that twitter wants more information from each system accessing tweets and is testing various ways of doing so. It is likely that this testing is the reason people on various systems report twitter working, not working, then working again.
HotTeaBag
(1,206 posts)As if it's a video on 'actual' Twitter my slower computer can't play it but I can see regular text Tweets just fine.
Either way, I'm not really missing much - Twitter is more or less a gutter.

(5,969 posts)But apparently that's also browser and device dependent.
On my mobile device, the content of the tweet is always displayed instead of the link. So if someone would copy paste or embed the content, the tweet is shown twice.

JHB
(37,160 posts)...either a display of the tweet, or if that doesn't appear, copied text, so that the reader here at DU can decide whether or not she/he is interested enough to pursue it further.
Similar to how if you're sharing an article, post a portion of it (<4 paragraphs to stay within fair use guidelines) so that people can read the gist of it and decide if they want to follow through to the whole thing.
And for that latter example, I'll add my own request to posters: Don't just quote the first four paragraphs, because sometimes that's still introductory text and the main thrust of the article comes later. Skip down a bit and excerpt some of the paragraphs that get into the thick of what the subject line said.
handmade34
(22,756 posts)when someone links a tweet it automatically comes up on my screen as a tweet and I assumed it did for others as well... I'm trying to understand why.... it the computer system?
JHB
(37,160 posts)It can vary by the settings people have, and other factors. Some people read DU on systems that block Twitter, so they don't see anything. Sometimes an update to the browser or on Twitter will cause an issue where there hadn't been one previously. And I think something displays differently for people who don't have Twitter accounts, but I can't test that because I do.
Copying the text into an "excerpt" box, or giving a brief description lets people get the gist of it without relying on display features that aren't as universal as you might think.
handmade34
(22,756 posts)after discussion and playing with another computer here in house, it obviously is a system issue...
I will be more cognizant about posting in the future... although often a tweet's virtue is not in the text but the photos/video
