40% say Independent and 31% say Democrats.
So Trump's failures appear to be eroding support for the whole party.

(5,528 posts)Because their leaving has ceded the party to more radical elements. So the primary process produces more radical candidates. They may complain about how radical those candidates are but will vote for them anyway.
Democrats have a similar although far less pronounced effect.
This movement towards registered independents appears to be good for democracy on the surface as a means to lessen the power of the two party system. However, it has only served to tribalize the parties while keeping them as the dominant force. Reform of gerrymandering would help because it would provide fewer safe districts that automatically elect the controlling party's candidate even when they are radical

(3,697 posts)If you vote 90%+ for the same party all the time you're not an Independent. I have an "Independent" friend who has voted for 1 Republican (Dick Lugar) in the past 30 years.

(108,980 posts)had a policy against that, because their position is that party membership changes over time. They're not going to weight their samples to match whatever happened in the last election.
