The dramatic images rocked the nation -- hundreds of thousands of people from all races taking to the streets across the United States, demanding an end to excessive police force against people of color.
What began as local outrage in response to George Floyd's death following an encounter with Minneapolis police officers soon spread throughout the country.
From coast to coast, demonstrators chanting "Black lives matter" and "no justice, no peace" united in hundreds of mostly peaceful protests, some risking their own safety. They found themselves tear gassed near the White House, allegedly assaulted by police in New York City, and shoved to the pavement by tactical teams in Buffalo.
Despite the personal risk, their voices were heard by fellow citizens and politicians alike, as demonstrators sparked a protest movement unlike anything the country has seen since the 1960s.
But it all may have been for nothing.
Partisan politics appears to have derailed any meaningful near-term reform.

(4,131 posts)At best they'll vote for some token measure to point to to claim that they're working on the problem, but the reality is they'll do nothing. That is, nothing until we make them do something. Once we put enough pressure on big business to put pressure on Republicans, they'll work with us and get things done.
We need to apply forceful, direct pressure to cities and corporations across the country.
The third police precinct in Minneapolis was burned to the ground and less than a month later the city council has voted, unanimously, to disband the police department and reform it in the image of the community.

Where Republicans get power, mostly no. But even with them, in some places its happening.
How hard is that for anyone to understand, even an MSN agent with an agenda to tear down hope?
The sweeping federal reforms Democrats already plan and Republicans already block of course depend on how many people get out to vote, including those who marched, both physically and in their hearts. That was the start, not the end.
