https://www.abc15.com/entertainment/events/bill-and-ted-wish-metrocenter-mall-well-amid-closingPHOENIX The adventures of Phoenix's Metrocenter mall may be coming to an end soon, but it can't really end without some good wishes from the movie duo that made it famous -- at least here locally.
For those that have not heard, Metrocenter mall, which was once considered to be the largest mall in Arizona, will permanently close on June 30.
Aside from being home to stores, shops, and at one point an ice skating rink, the mall also served as one of the shooting locations for the 1989 cult classic, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.
Not familiar? Here's a quick-to-the-point synopsis from an anonymous user via IMDB:
Two seemingly dumb teens set off on a quest to prepare the ultimate historical presentation with the help of a time machine.
The film starred a young Keanu Reaves and Alex Winter.
Production actually took place at several locations around the Valley, including a Circle K in Tempe, Golfland-Sunplash in Mesa, Coronado High School in Scottsdale, and a bowling alley in Tempe. (In 2019, Phoenix New Times published a cover story celebrating the film's 30th anniversary that features interviews with some of the crew. )

OP
Yep. They'd give the anchor stores zero or near zero rent, then charge the shit out of all others.

high school. The original Coronado has been torn down and rebuilt. The gorgeous mural celebration the fine arts was saved and is on the new campus. The mosaic mural was designed and created by the first art teacher and his students.

It was at a theatre in that mall, where the movie the 8pm showing of "The Never-ending Story" had not started by 8:15, that I was able to ask "When does the 8 o'clock movie start?"

Because they couldn't stop with the crazy high rent.
At one time metrocenter was the largest indoor mall in the country. When my east coast relatives used to visit, they all wanted to see metrocenter. Same with my Israeli relatives.

Fun times at the Metrocenter. I remember people telling me all about the Bill and Ted's adventure stuff.
