(45,003 posts)With all their technology and resources, they could have helped lift society higher by emphasizing what makes people truly better or dragged us all down into the dirt by empowering our very worst instincts. They chose really poorly.

(65,076 posts)These large consumer driven companies don't really believe that advertising was all that beneficial.
Too many are making this decision too quickly.
It's likely a pullback or restructuring of social media advertising was in the works.
As things got even more toxic, it drove their decisions.
If the resume, I'd expect contract clauses requiring rebates if certain types of disinformation is not moderated properly. A likely topic in the conversations such as those Starbucks is referencing.
Keeps the sword at the neck of the SM companies because it's not only reduced revenue, but that have to return some they already billed.
These consumer companies don't want the stench sticking to them.
But, if there were billions in advantage by targeting social media customers, I think this movement would be going more slowly.
