I'll tell you what bothers me the most:

Last edited Sun Jun 28, 2020, 06:04 PM - Edit history (1)

This American civilization will not learn a single thing from this pandemic. That is most clear and obvious, and there will be much revisionist history and Contravening dialogue and over a reasonably short period of time, the mistakes that were made will never be acknowledged, the dead will be buried, societally we will move on from this, and the next time a virus or a bacterium rears it’s ugly head, there will be no memory of this by the political and the phony righteous people.

Yes of course, there will be those who will carry the flag for sanity, for safety, for judicious application of epidemiological principles, but it will be outweighed and voided by those who deny, deny, deny. And then of course, when all hell breaks loose, people will say who would have been able to predict this? And the society will shake its collective head and say nobody could have. And all of us who sit around and scream of course this was going to happen we knew it, will once again be ignored by those who “know better”.

One of the things that’s so disturbing about these processes, is watching Doctors like Dr. Birx, Who has fundamentally repudiated her academics, plastered a stupid smile on her face like all those White House economists, and stated her reverence for the federal administration, the actions which they have taken, (ha ha) and the results. While she talks about the increase in hospitalizations of 20 to 40-year-olds, she might as well be discussing the new species of daffodil which is growing in her backyard. These people possess hypocritical incompetence, and they have been elevated to a level Far beyond their abilities. The really brilliant people are the people you see interviewed who are sputtering and stuttering because they can’t believe how poorly this is been mismanaged. Even they mitigate their language as to not offend, but you can read between the lines and see that they are horrified and frightened.

We have wasted months when we could’ve been forming a federal response to this outbreak and conquering it. But as we know the Trump administration deliberately and with malice aforethought have set us up for increased death and morbidity. As far as I’m concerned the governors who did not pay attention, the members of the federal government who did not act appropriately, and the health officials who went along with this in order to further their career should be put on trial for manslaughter. It is a disgrace these people hold these positions and the trust and decency has been waived for allegiance to an Utterly depraved and malicious ignoramus who bullied his way to the presidency.

This man has not acted when our soldiers were put in harms way in the manner in which they were is treasonous, and a betrayal of everything American.

All that being said I want to relate an anecdote which occurred yesterday, Saturday. A Gentleman came into see me in my office who is a salesman, with the usual sharp salesman patter and bluster, and The typical self-assured ness of a successful salesman. You all know exactly what I mean by this description. He proceeded to tell me that Trump and his minions have done everything correctly and people were just complaining for no reason. I asked him on what basis did he make the judgment that everything was correctly managed when we were on a literal exponential move towards greater tragedy. He replied they do the best they can that’s all they can do. And I countered him and said that is so far from the truth that it’s embarrassing. And then he sarcastically said I defer to your medical judgment which is superior to mine. And I replied and well that you should and you better because you don’t know anything about virology, microbiology, epidemiology, pulmonary disease, blood vessel disorders, clotting disorders, platelet disorders, stroke as a mechanism, and the notion of morbidity and mortality increasing because of a disease process inflicted upon younger people. And then I said with a smile, but you’re right, what is there to know? Everyone has it all figured out, that’s why things are getting worse and while I agree with you, we are probably not going to have another Shut down in the way we had the first one, we will however see is a lot of dead people including many dead people close to us. I have already lost seven acquaintances and/or patients due to the virus with many more having had a Stormy course following moderate disease processes. That number will rise exponentially as people do not practice the simple task of social distancing and mask wearing. But you know what, you do what you want because it’s a free country and apparently one of the freedoms we now have is freedom to infect, freedom to cause disease, and freedom to kill. And far be it for me to limit people’s’ freedom in this great country of ours.

Well, he didn’t know what to say so he said just fix my tooth. And I said gladly, because in a few weeks I may not be able to do that because I myself am in four high-risk groups and if I catch this I’m likely going to be very seriously ill. And he gave me that horrified look he said really? And I said yes really. But I’m here at work because I have to work and I have to serve my patients and I have to do the best I can under very trying circumstances and your biggest problem if I get sick and die it’s finding another dentist. And then I winked at him and said of course I won’t have any more problems so I’ll be just fine.

This is a more or less daily occurrence with at least 1 to 2 assholes per day voicing idiotic opinions which vary With both science and common sense. Sick of stupidity and ignorance. As a final word, when people make the statement “well I’m no expert but…” I say then keep it to yourself because I’m not interested in opinions about complex things from people with no expertise. Yes it’s harsh but you know what I’m tired of being nice.

I was going to say the same thing - every time the populace becomes educated and starts waking up, here comes a shiny pretty to distract everyone. First Victrola and cocaine; then Radio and Speakeasies; then Depression and FDR; then WWII and Almighty Dollar; then Korea and Speedballs; Vietnam and Heroin and Color TV, LSD, pot; 70s and Cocaine, Crank and Quaaludes and CB Radios; 80s, Crack, Just Say No and Cable; 90s - this is hard because Ecstasy actually creates a Group Mind rather than individual addiction, but 90s Raves and Ecstasy, late 90s Internet; then we have 2001, 9/11 and Internet explodes, then streaming, then Phone Culture and back to basics, Cannabis.

We're due for another LSD or Ecstasy - both are non-addicting and like I stated above develop a Group Mind which causes leaps in civilization until the corporation nation states either monetize it or some busybodies clamp down on it. Even the Ancient Greeks had ergot, early front runner of LSD. "The Drug Years" TV series and "What a Long Strange Trip It's Been" which the TV series is based upon are fantastic about tracing drug use in the US and the both ill and good that came from each one.

Each and every time people look up beyond themselves and starting talking and thinking, then comes the "Next.Best.Thing." Both electronic or drug wise.

On a personal basis, I like several of the dentists here, but how can I trust their medical opinion when they listen to Fox? You would think that their education and knowledge base would let them know in the first five minutes that Fox is nothing but lies. Sadly where I live, the ultimate authority of medical education is the cute ex-cheerleader who wears a leather skirt and brings in drug samples.

This happened sometime in the 1980s I think. Too many movies to distort logic and reasoning while feeding delusion, too much debt to make everyone think life is easy, too much materialism to distract. We are a long way from "man is by nature a political animal", I think that's a Hobbesian quote.

When the country was founded citizens were tied to their labor, you worked, you produced. It was tangible. Now we've lost sight of the economic relationships that shape our interface with the economic and financial system. People really believe you just buy an index fund and retire rich, forever.

In every other worldwide pandemic or crisis, the rest of the world suffered about the same amount that we did or worse. In the case of SARS-COV-2, Trump's incompetence is standing out like a bright light in one's eyes. The thing that history will record is how incompetently Trump handled this crisis, no one will be able to erase that with weasel words. The rest of the world outside of Brazil and Russia were equally surprised by this pandemic, yet on a national level, they have handled it almost endlessly better than Trump has.

I need to (can't stop myself) from replying to the right wing nuts who assume everyone in their orbit thinks like they do. I do so politely. My boss, who is a Democrat, will say something to me like "it's best not to engage with them." I then reply "You know I hold my tongue 99 out of 100 times, but somehow I can't completely repress my reaction, and need to comment once in a while.

I live in a 60/40 repug county, and work in a store that's been in business almost 100 years. We sell Military stuff, bags, pants, t-shirts, coats, hats and caps, boots, and assorted stickers, pins, patches, etc. among other things like socks, t-shirts, hats, water bottles, hiking poles.

During Obama's presidency, I'd often hear comments disparaging him. Every once in a while I'd reply "I think he was a very good president" or "I voted for him." Or during Bush2 when they'd bash president Clinton I'd say something similar.

I haven't engaged 45 supporters much. 3 years ago someone came in looking for a rump flag. I gave them a confused look, replied we didn't carry political items. And yesterday a man was in wearing a trump cap, not red. We had a pleasant conversation about their visit to the town, celebrating their 45th anniversary, his military service. He didn't bring up 45, but then he didn't need to because he was wearing the hat! I gave him a military discount, thanked him for his service. In retrospect, I might have offered to sell him a different, better hat, but didn't go there. But I might in the near future.

Have you seen the website Republican voters against trump? They have testimonials from repugs who warn or rant against 45, pledge to support Biden. I take some comfort from that.

As for revisionist history, we live in a time when we have to deal with a revisionist present, and the layers of truth (and lies) are partially obscured, and complicated by the internet.
Many in the present and future will earn or enhance their academic credentials by investigating, uncovering, and consolidating the incredible amount of information about the failures of the current administration.

I look forward to reading the history of current times in 5, 10 and 20 years.

Depression, WWII, etc. is how we know what happened and get a clearer picture into people and events around them, their states, their country during those times.

Long-hand may be best. Tech changes way too fast to think someone would be able to access some app even 20 years from now, much less 40, 50, + years. Or at least keep a hard copy.

Being at home, there is definitely time to do this, become detail oriented and no "news" too small. Posterity will thank us all.

From a couple of long-form articles I was reading about 1918 Flu and Depression, the reason we didn't really didn't hear about even from then was the absolutely brutality in the way people treated each other. No act was too small and evil - not unlike today. Think in terms of "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" Shocking movie. Wish they had the guts to get into the unvarnished truth like that movie does, but the scolders and pearl clutchers, you know. If we have to have movie warnings about smoking, we've gone a bridge too far.

Another great book is "The Great Influenza" - it starts with WWI and the Great Propaganda Machine that had never existed before pre-WWI. We were a collection of states, nothing really united about them all until they started cranking out the lies. Everyone thinks that propaganda started with Goebbels in Germany, nope he learned it all from us. He just fine-tuned it.

After the Flu and Depression, there was a tacit agreement for everyone to move on and not discuss events from those times due to the brutality in the treatment of others. The only way to really learn is to read diaries.

the memory of everyone living at the time, just as the polio epidemic did in the 40s and 50s. It took a several generations for the memory to fade in society. Everyone alive today is going to remember this for the rest of their lives, and their children will hear the stories over and over. Don't forget, this isn't half over yet. We will probably be dealing with this virus for a decade in one form or another - almost everyone will have family members or friends that have died or been permanently severely impaired the virus. Many will have negative effects for the rest of their lives. Adjustments in social interaction may linger for years - or return on an annual basis as the virus flares up much like the flu that kills thousands every year. Texas and Florida are experiencing dramatic flare-ups. No, my friend, this will not be soon forgotten.

The 1918 epidemic is famous for not being mentioned in literature following the resolution of the outbreak. It’s like the San Francisco earthquake in the 1980’s. For all the horror, it’s rarely discussed. I’m not saying it won’t reverberate for a while, but soon enough people will move on.
