(2,426 posts)As a third generation Portlander who loves her city and who supports BLM and the reconstruction of our police force, I have to ask what we should call these nightly confrontations. Are they anti Trump Administration Fascism or pro BLM or both? Many respected long time Black leaders And clergy have called for an end to violence, saying it is not helping their cause. Our notorious police force needs to be completely reconstructed. What it looks like to me is that now that the Trump Guardia Civil are here, the confrontations are about that: Portland vs. the unlawful use of Border Patrol on the streets of our city. I support this! The nation is watching to see if we will tolerate this fascist more by Trump. We must hold the line for the whole countrys sake.I am proud of the Moms! We should keep up the creative non violence which shows these thugs for who they are and who they represent unlawfully.
Also I worry about the long term economic consequences of this street fighting on our city center.
We have worked long and hard to make it a great and interesting city by good planning, event planning, activity planning and its a great downtown. But it is a downtown that has struggled and is struggling even more with the lack of tourism and a bad rap about our large homeless population. We finally passed a huge levy to help the homeless and things are going to get better, but now COVID and the 52 days of rage are hurting our city. I do not mean that BLM is trivial or to be shunted aside. Indeed we as a city and a state are making rapid progress on ensuring that Black Lives Do Matter! Every time I go downtown to see what is happening I shop or buy a take out dinner to support downtown. The boarded up windows make me sad. I photograph the wonderful murals that are there and I see the empty buildings. I cant go to demonstrations for health reasons but I donate to BLM causes and the ACLU to bring unlawful actors to heel. I just wanted to share my anguish about the city I love.

(14,796 posts)Few of us here understand all the storied history behind the Portland movement and every piece of input helps.
I've been searching for sites explaining some of that history and hope to share that as I find it. I found a neat source last night in the Portland Mercury paper and there's much to learn.

(14,796 posts)When I first read your post, I assumed it meant there's a heavy Lebanese presence in Portland.....
But then I found this...
From: https://archive.seattletimes.com/archive/?date=20030819&slug=protests19e
From Wikipedia's entry on Portland, I see there's quite a history of racism there with the business and political classes but mixed with a strong liberal presence.

(220 posts)A good review of some of the video out of Hong Kong would be interesting. They used tennis racquets, pot holder mittens, umbrellas, laser pointers and roofing nails/tacks in their defensive plan.
The arrival of 150 agents in Chicago will be interesting as I wonder if the Windy City Po-Po will welcome or hinder the Feds.

(26,454 posts)need to arrive on the scene with the following equipment:
Mask against coronavirus
Helmet (bike helmet would do) against gestapo bullets
Goggles or wraparound eyeglasses against tear gas
Umbrella which could double as instrument to block tear gas when fully open, or to push cannisters away when closed.
Hockey stick to knock cannisters away
Leaf blower to blow gas back at the gestapo
A sign, of course, to say what you are protesting
Phone to take videos and stills to post
Ingenuity and courage.
Good job, Portland. The rest of America is watching. Getting ready for our turn. The world is watching, too.

(77,270 posts)The second time they used gas, they fired shells into the wind.
The cloud blew back at them, and more German soldiers got incapacitated than British or French.
These protestors are just controlling the wind.
Good idea!

(77,270 posts)That event was the reason why both sides switched from chlorine gas to mustard gas (bis(2-chloroethyl) sulfide) & phosgene (COCl2).
These have lower vapor pressure, hydrogen bond to water vapor, so the hang in place and are less susceptible to rapid movement by wind.
They're all really toxic but, as someone who has used phosgene & chlorine as reactants, it's much safer to work with the former. Still in a hood, wearing PPE, including clearing the lab just to carry it through the room. But, easier & safer to work with.
My interest in this whole WW1 thing came from actually working with these dangerous compounds.
Man, what were they thinking?
