"Mitch better have my money": Protesters march to McConnell's home as he weighs 80% unemployment cut

https://www.salon.com/2020/07/23/mitch-better-have-my-money-protesters-march-to-mcconnells-home-as-he-weighs-80-unemployment-cut/

A temporary extension weighed by Republicans would slash enhanced unemployment benefits from $600 per week to $100

Snip

Protesters marched to the Washington home of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., on Wednesday to call for an extension of federal pandemic unemployment benefits before they expire next week.

The protesters were accompanied by a caravan of supporters, including a band on a trailer with a banner reading, "Mitch better have my money," which is a play on the Rihanna song "B*tch Better Have My Money."

The protest was held as Republicans and the White House push to slash the benefit to less than $200 per week, setting up a confrontation with Democrats, who approved a full extension of the $600 enhanced benefits in a House bill passed way back in May.

Republicans have had trouble agreeing on a plan among themselves, and a temporary extension of the benefits through December remains a possibility. The temporary extension would reduce the benefit to only $100 per week, or a cut of more than 80%, CNBC reported. About 30 million Americans currently rely on the benefit to survive.

Is the GOP intentionally trying to increase the chaos and unrest on a massive, never before seen level?

With all the talk about the benefits and amounts, the equation to me is, you bail out the masses right now or all hell is going to break loose. That's not a speculation.

A very big mistake is to allow people to get to the "nothing left to lose" phase while at the same time having the wealthy amassing truckloads of cash. That only pours a bag of fresh salt in our wounds. What do people who are on the verge of, (or already there) having no place to live, no more possessions, increasing hunger and no future potential in sight to recover going to do? I don't expect them to sit there and take it, especially when there are many around them in the same boat.

I can't imagine the TRUMPGOP being ignorant of the potentially destructive outcome and I suspect that inciting an economic rebellion on the streets could be a strategy, not a mistake. I have posted before that the GOP is trying to save itself from demographic obsolescence and continue with its dinosaur/Feudal politics NO MATTER WHAT IT TAKES.

Instead of focusing on that obsolete and tired freeloader/dignity of work and cracking the whip rhetoric, it is easy to see the benefit for the "economy" as you know.

For most people, that money goes right back into the loop again. If it was phrased as shoring up the "economy" in the way the propaganda made it absolutely essential to shore up banks, corporations and the wealthy, (stimulus/tax cuts, rinse and repeat) it would be more realistic.

In this case, it is absolutely essential to bailout or bust. The consumer loop is producer/provider/consumer. The third aspect of the circle is often purposefully and conveniently ignored. This time, that's not at all appropriate or doable.

Just imagine the economic activity that would provoke and how it would ease the collective state of mind of the people.

The larger the amount, the great the impact.

We are heading for a collision with a need for UBI or something similar anyway and there are many reasons for that with more coming down the road.

The career I have had for 30yrs is gone as of now. 8 yrs from retirement 50 bucks an hour. My fellow brothers and sisters cannot return to work as there are no job sites with running water, the conventions we work will not be back til there is a vaccine. New Career?? Tried that in 2008, no one wants a union member trying a new career at less than 50% pay. They laughed at me. Take away the 600 I'm good as on the street.

would not be earning more than they did while working...and I would not be so cavalier...if the economy goes off the cliff you could face unemployment as well. The 600 keeps the economy from getting worse but not sure it stimulates it sufficiently.

If you provide necessary funds to working class people adequately, then it's (Puh-Puh-Puh-Pum) taxes increases on the wealthy. How else could we maintain the value of our currency or continue the charade of concern about the little ol' federal budget?

I just jest.

Even for my wife and I, who are doing pretty well, we spend our last stimulus as rapidly as possible with small, local businesses. It was tempting to just throw it into savings, but local brewpubs, craft stores and farmer's markets were where we spent it.

While this is getting national attention right now due to the pandemic, people can and do find themselves being unemployed for various reasons throughout the year.

I myself and many many others were unemployed for a year in 2009 due to the Bush recession. I was receiving the maximum amount in Michigan of $362. Over 10 years later, that amount has not changed. There was no talk at all about supplementing with several hundred dollars a week back then, the only legislation passed was to increase the number of weeks.

If you look at other states, some pay less and others pay substantially more. In some cases, more than double. There is no reason that Iowa or N. Dakota can pay $600 per week while California is $450. Massachusetts pays nearly $1000.

If people truly cannot survive on the normal state unemployment benefit, that is what needs to be enhanced rather than count on the Federal government to pass temporary arbitrary increases. The states need to step up and increase their own amounts.

Yet the republithugs want to cut Medicare/medicaid.
We havent had a raise that was really a raise in decades. Rent cost goes up,food stamps pay less,or something else that takes that tiny bit of a "raise" away.

They do the same shell game with employment and unemployment benifiets. A careful calculation to make sure everyone is over a barrel.

Republicans do this on purpose. They love cheap labor, and see people like me as not worthy of life.
Republicans are social darwinists and since they are dark triad personalities they put themselves as most worthy to survive. But without thier stolen money and underpaid hired help, they would not live a day how the working class, poor and disabled are forced to live.

bribe to keep the farmers voting G-O-P though, so there's that. I don't know how much in total republicans have paid farmers for their loyalty. Trump's vaunted trade war with China hasn't worked out as well as he's boasted. When these farmers find out that they're never going to get their customers back they'll be a little hostile. Of course by then the GOP won't be in power, so......sorry suckers! It'll all get blamed on Democrats anyway, because that's what republicans do. They lie.

Unlike the right side of the equation, who have no sense of humor at all.

On edit: take note, the right’s concept of humor is mockery. They mock people. They make fun of people. They insult people. Watch for it. Mockery—it’s all they got but they think it’s humor.
