(102,358 posts)A strapping young guy in his late 20s strides up to her and tells her he has a health condition and thus can't wear a mask and lets him go right by. I was furious and stepped up to her and asked "what the hell? You know he has no health condition that precludes a mask and if he did, he shouldn't be out and about putting himself at risk." She shrugged and said Walmart instructed her not to question. Did I say this is in a locale with a mandatory mask-order since May and in a state with a mandatory order?
My anger over this is only slightly less than the a'holes (usually mid-20ish men wearing their damned mask BELOW their nose or chin). I pick my battles, but DAMN!

I bring this up not to suggest it is a new phenomenon or a unique phenomenon, but rather only because if stores are doing it in an area with a long-standing mask order and where MOST stores are trying to enforce, this will be a consequential issue nationwide. Most of these stores have offered online shopping and curbside pickup for months now, but rather than directing these mask-objectors there, they are increasingly just letting them in. Ignore at your own peril, because that is exactly what it will be.

That's what I did with Dollar General when they gave me the, "I'm not allowed to say anything."
Dollar General is the ONLY store I have encountered where the store is not even making an attempt to comply. We have at least 95% compliance in any place that I've been. Amazing how simple it was - all it took was for DeWine to actually order it - and voila - everyone is now complying. Except Dollar General.

The people who don't wear a mask at all are likely to be selfish right wingers who can't be reasoned with. But the ones who wear it below the nose are willing to wear a mask, but are too lazy or foolish to take the time to think about the reason to wear one and why not covering your nose doesn't cut it.
It also pisses me off that they are putting store personnel (some of who are just kids) in the position of having to enforce the mask requirement, which can be dangerous these days.

We are under a mask mandate in Ohio too, and it seems like most everyone has one on, but quite a few of these assholes pull it down under their nose or chin once they get inside the store. And then there are the ones with mask under chin walking around blabbering away on their phones.
And what is with these stores that put a small lady at the entrance to remind people to wear a mask. They need to hire big burly guys with tattoos who look menacing.

And when possible, even tell store management that you will not come back to their shop until the mask requirement is fully enforced.
I agree that stores really do need to do a better job of enforcement. I like the idea of a big burly guy at the entrance enforcing.
And I also liked the story of the Team 5 response in a food store. They surrounded the non-compliant person with 5 carts, and escorted them around the store. Then they forced the person to wait in a special line for checkout. The cashier was on break. After some minutes, the person gave up and left without their food, crying.

It makes zero difference that the state does not have a mask mandate - the store can declare one (and apparently has). All it has to do is to call the police and inform them the shopper is trespassing.

(11,686 posts)Walmart has gotten a little better about people wearing masks but for a lot they get in and either take them off or become nose dicks. Then we have a local grocery store were most people do not wear masks. Then there is Safeway where everyone wears a mask except for a very few and they do not even have a person standing there to enforce it. I live in a very red county but I am wondering if more smart people shop Safeway than the other two stores.
Ms. Toad
(34,087 posts)two grocery stores catercorner across the street from each other had dramatically different compliance rates (80% v less than 50%). Obviously serving the same population (and my observations were made on the same day, no more than an hour apart).
The difference seemed to be how seriously the store was taking its encouragement to wear masks. The store with 80% compliance had one way entrances and exits, one way aisles, employees standing near the carts offering a freshly sanitized cart, and safety announcements on a continuous loop in the store.
The other store had taken virtually no internal measures. One door had a rope down the middle with incoming on one side and exiting on the other. They still have bulk food you could paw through.
You get the picture. That level of care (or lack thereof) acts as a signal to those who want a welcome to idiots level of care.

I guarantee you if they had a big guy at their entrance they would have 100% compliance.
That said we finally have almost 100% mask wearing here. The best Ive seen is ABC liquor. I was buying cigars and beer and saw a big guy in a big truck coming in with no mask. The manager told him firmly he would not be sold anything without a mask and even offered him one. The asshole just left. But did not raise a ruckus. (34,087 posts)The health department is (generally) the entity in charge of enforcement. At least where I live, they WILL follow up - and if enough complaints are confirmed they will either shut the store down - or impose fines that make the more interested in complying.
This is literally a matter of life and death (or, at a minimum, permanent injury to heart, lungs, etc.)
Then write an email to corporate informing them you will not be back until they refuse to serve customers not complying with the law.

(28,349 posts)This is literally a matter of life and death (or, at a minimum, permanent injury to heart, lungs, etc.)
It is for me. I'm compromised by metastatic breast cancer, on oxygen, and age. It's in my lungs and several other places. So, if I catch it, I'm a goner. I don't go anywhere but to my doctor's visits, and the front porch. I have gone out with my best friend, but usually I sit in the car while she goes in. Not always, but usually. Everyone I interact with are super careful when they are out.
What breaks my heart is the suffering people endure once they contract this virus.
Why those who insist on being maskless don't think about the suffering of others is beyond me. Considering them as thoughtless is not a good enough answer. Especially if they consider themselves Christian. Jesus taught them differently.

Do you belong to a VFW or American Legion? Do you talk to other old Vets? It might just surprise you their views on masks and coronavirus. I took a bullet in my head during Nam. I put my life on the line and dodged through gun fire to save a buddy of mine. He got a Purple Heart for that. Ask these elderly Vets if they are worried about catching the virus or about their giving it to others, and you will get a dirty look and a NO.
When our local V first opened up outside nobody was mask wearing. First day of opening they were even taking members temperatures. Next day, the thermometer was gone. Asst. Commander thought somebody stole it because they didn't like the idea.
When Gov.Wolf mandated bars serve meals, since their kitchen staff quit, this Post went back outside and hired a food truck. Does everybody EAT ordering drinks? Nope. Nobody wears masks sitting at tables drinking. They certainly don't all live in the same household at these tables. I can tell you that the Commander and Asst. I just got lucky with the ACA and aged into Medicare. Otherwise I would have just paid the fine for myself rather than spend a lot of money for something I never intended, and haven't, to use like medical prevention, testing, vaccination, etc. If I was in my normal state of mind (in shock) at and after my car crash, I could and would have refused to go to the ER.

After months of trial and error, I discovered that I can adjust it right at the base of my nose just covering my nostrils and can breathe better. Air gets through better there. Not good enough? Does your face covering have to be at the bridge of you nose? My NOSTRILS are still covered!
Speaking of masks, when EMS put one of those standard surgical masks on me after my car crash, I discovered getting out bed and going to Restroom that the surgical mask was very LOOSE on me. I am a very small woman. I could fit my pinky finger easily inside the sides of it. AIR getting through, and breath getting out?

Sorry if you cannot see the psychological messaging to increase compliance.
I AM elderly and believe it is up to me how to best protect myself (or not), not society. I absolve the rest of society. My 36 year old daughter is immune compromised. We are both on the same page as to society protecting vulnerable at risk us.
I do wear a mask for stores for entry. My motivation is not health reasons. Certainly not outside in parking lots. Not having my groceries delivered to my home because I am old and most at risk. (1,850 posts)I work part-time in retail, a local family owned store of 3 generations. Whenever someone enters without one, we ask nicely "Do you have a mask, or do you need one?" Often they pull one out of their pocket. Otherwise we give them one, no charge, but they sometimes purchase a face covering bandana, buff, shemagh, or mask. When their nose is exposed, it's as if they're not wearing one, and asking if they realize wearing a mask that way is not helping, it defeats the purpose is more confrontational. And I don't want to get close or have a conversation when they're partially masked.
It's mandatory in NC but up to the stores to enforce, and many store owners and employees don't wear masks themselves, which pisses me off. Reporting them will do nothing.
Some stores post the regulations, apologetically or assertively, or with humor. Our store says "thank you for wearing your mask". Many stores have nothing posted, and those are the ones not wearing masks themselves. I live and work in a quaint mountain and retirement town that sees a lot of visitors and vacationers.
I generally wear a 3 ply mask, with a tissue insert as a filter. I wear the mask so I won't infect others, but hope my mask might protect me from them if/when I encounter non and partial maskers.

In the parking lot even before going into the grocery store, at least 90 % of the people had their masks on walking to the door, the rest complied before entering the store but for the guy that sure thought he was an exception. Everyone going in was masked...except for this one asshole: Young while guy, pretty good sized guy, tall and husky, sailed passed us and went in.
Well, that lasted all of 30 seconds. The "security guard" was a youngish lady, very petite, and appeared to be Asian. She stopped the asshole cold! I was totally impressed. She told him he had to leave. He looked at her and hunched over and left. Two minutes later he was back with a mask. Just a plain blue medical one...and no bullshit.
That was encouraging to see. Only one asshole out of many many!
I wear my mask to avoid trouble, but I am unconvinced that they do much. Plus, Im essential and have been working throughout. I work with hospitalized psychiatric patients and they arent real cooperative, so they dont wear masks. I conduct myself in a way that I feel is as safe as possible and dont worry too much about what other people do. If I see someone that makes me uncomfortable I steer clear.
