There were decades ago, or is it more people hanging out at the beach, or what? Seems like so often I hear of shark attacks. One was at Folly Beach, South Carolina this morning.

(16,073 posts)The kid was bitten on the foot. That's a shark "tasting".
Most attacks are just that. A shark will taste you to see if they want to eat you. Humans don't taste all that good to most sharks. Too fishy.
If humans were their primary food, no one would go swimming.

(1,207 posts)Usually several people a summer get bitten in SC.
I used to sit on the pier on Garden City, SC and watch hammerheads near the shore. Actually it seems like there were more back in the sixties.

(54,448 posts)The number of shark sightings and beach closures has gone up exponentially. It is now routine to see seals pop up in the water less than ten meters from where we are swimming. The water is way warmer than it used to be twenty or even ten years ago, too. This is like a big Free Lunch sign in Sharksville, and they now come in increasing numbers. We NEVER used to see great whites that far north.
Since swimmers in black wetsuits resemble seals to sharks, they occasionally get treated as the lunch sharks thought they were. They rarely come back for seconds, since we don't taste like seals, but if you've already been bitten in half, that is small consolation.
