With mail-in voting generating not only record numbers in Massachusetts but also the most buzz nationwide in an unusual campaign season dominated by COVID-19 concerns, it might be easy to forget: today is Primary Day.
For residents looking to vote in person Tuesday, polls will be open statewide from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. For information on polling locations, check the Secretary of the Commonwealths Find my election information tool online and enter your address.
There are more than 50 contested races across the state Tuesday, including a tight and increasingly bitter battle between Sen. Ed Markey and Rep. Joe Kennedy III; several U.S. House races, including a nine-candidate contest for Kennedys vacated seat and a challenge to longtime Rep. Richard Neal from Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse; more than three dozen combined State House and State Senate races; a pair of Governors Council Districts; and several local races in multiple counties and the town of Norfolk.
In estimates that are record figures, as many as 1.3 million voters will cast ballots in Democratic primaries, and 150,000 in Republican primaries, Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin projected on Monday. The overwhelming majority of the 768,000 Democratic and 88,000 Republican ballots already received statewide are mail-in ballots, according to election officials.
