The latest polling evidence suggests Trump's convention flopped

Opinion by Greg Sargent

September 2, 2020 at 10:35 a.m. EDT

As the wildly hyped imagery of urban unrest and up-is-down coronavirus propaganda at the GOP convention showed, the convention’s primary aim was to create the illusion that President Trump has decisively crushed the virus — and that the only thing left for White suburbanites to fear is the radical left’s efforts to violently push the country into civil collapse.

Three new polls suggest that neither of those notions proved particularly persuasive.

The toplines in the three polls — from Selzer & Company, Reuters/Ipsos and USA Today/Suffolk University — all show Joe Biden leading Trump nationally. The first has Biden up by 49 percent to 41 percent among likely voters. The second and third have Biden up by 47 percent to 40 percent and by 50 percent to 43 percent among registered voters.

All that is consistent with current polling averages putting Biden up by just over seven points. Trump might have gotten a slight bounce. But if he is down by that much at what should be a high point — and remember, explosive scenes from Wisconsin have been dominating the news — that’s a tough place to be.

In 2016, their campaign was that America is a dystopian hellscape and only Trump can make it great again like it used to be in some fictional memory. How's that working out 4 years later?

Claiming that Biden will somehow make urban unrest worse is not very convincing. Dem mayors, Dem governors, BLM, Antifa, and apparently a bunch of Moms, Dads, and grandparents are all conspiring to burn down their own cities to make Trump look bad. The media is promoting a pandemic hoax to make Trump look bad. That sounds a bit unlikely. Maybe Trump looks bad because he really is bad.

Trump branded himself in 2016 as a fresh, new government approach to “stop the carnage” as he said.

He’s stuck with that brand—carnage stopper—one with a 4-year failure record now. He can’t change it. That’s the problem/benefit of branding, it is 99% permanent.

So all he can do is create more carnage to stop In the future, he’s failed at preventing the past carnage.

But let him try, standing in front of a burned-out building and telling people “this is your future”.

we still need to make sure the vote gets done! We have to make sure Trump doesnt declare victory just because all the votes haven't been counted by the next morning after election day - which is the very thing he will do. Then when he loses, how do we get him to leave if he won't budge?

After years of seeing it on Twitter every effing day? No thanks, i'll watch the cartoon network. It would prove to be more informative anyway.

The con is old and getting older by the second. NOTHING is working for him. Now, if we can still vote like our lives depend on it, and overwhelm orange cheating. He's cooked.

Failing to achieve even dead cat bounce is more than a little pathetic.

I found the prepared speeches by all those unaccomplished relatives who are heirs to his fortune very engaging.

It was much more revealing to me than a hot-mic recording of a relative speaking candidly. Don't believe your lying ears.
