the last couple days i have been hammering right wing sites on facebook like rush and fox and ben shapiro with this meme and the responses have been funny. most of the time its 'you idiot, republicans freed the slaves'
when i say 'this picture doesnt talk about democrats and republicans just right wing vs. left wing, sometimes, there is that one idiot who says 'the confederates WERE the left wingers'
then i nail them! 'really? general robert e lee was a left winger? the guys in dixie fighting for states rights were left wingers? you sure you dont want to rethink that?'
that usually shuts them up.
but the fact that a conservative on a site like dennis prager makes the claim that the civil war south was left wing is CRAZY cuz prager calls leftism evil. so im not quite sure how they square that circle 'the confederacy was left wing and evil but i fly their flag and dont take down their statues' lol

(32,676 posts)Geneticist have traced MAGAs and QAnons back to the Know Nothing movement.
The Know Nothing movement, formally known as the Native American Party, and the American Party from 1855 onwards, was a nativist political party and movement in the United States, which operated nationwide in the mid-1850s. It was primarily an anti-Catholic, anti-immigration, and xenophobic movement, originally starting as a secret society. The Know Nothing movement also briefly emerged as a major political party in the form of the American Party. Adherents to the movement were to simply reply "I know nothing" when asked about its specifics by outsiders, providing the group with its common name.[3]
Supporters of the Know Nothing movement believed that an alleged "Romanist" conspiracy was being planned to subvert civil and religious liberty in the United States, and sought to politically organize native-born Protestants in what they described as a defense of their traditional religious and political values. The Know Nothing movement is remembered for this theme because of fears by Protestants that Catholic priests and bishops would control a large bloc of voters. In most places, the ideology and influence of the Know Nothing movement lasted only a year or two before disintegrating due to weak and inexperienced local leaders, a lack of publicly declared national leaders, and a deep split over the issue of slavery. In the South, the party did not emphasize anti-Catholicism as frequently as it did in the North,

(35,076 posts)This would be something more useful to outside observers and to the politically uninitiated than to change the right-wing minds.
What you are witnessing is compartmentalized thinking.
They will say whatever is right at the time in their heads in order to quell any cognitive dissonance they may have.
In other words, they're going to go back to being pro-confederate the very second they're done talking to you.
Your tools to fight this, to let the politically uninitiated see this are:
