Trump admin orders military newspaper Stars and Stripes to shut down (in print since the Civil War)

The Pentagon has ordered Stars and Stripes to shut down for no good reason

Trump wants to pull funding from Stars and Stripes, a newspaper for American troops that began in the Civil War and has been serving our soldiers.

Even for those of us who are all too wearily familiar with President Donald Trump’s disdain for journalists, his administration’s latest attack on the free press is a bit of a jaw-dropper.

In a heretofore unpublicized recent memo, the Pentagon delivered an order to shutter Stars and Stripes, a newspaper that has been a lifeline and a voice for American troops since the Civil War. The memo orders the publisher of the news organization (which now publishes online as well as in print) to present a plan that “dissolves the Stars and Stripes” by Sept. 15 including "specific timeline for vacating government owned/leased space worldwide.”

“The last newspaper publication (in all forms) will be September 30, 2020,” writes Col. Paul Haverstick Jr., the memo’s author.

So, House of Representatives, please find out WTF? Investigate it. Track the decision back to its source which, I have an odd feeling, will be someone somewhere in the White House

were lifelines for overseas military members, who often had no other access to the news. Today, it's a little easier for most military members to see the news, in the age of the Internet, but people still rely on the "Stars and Stripes" to keep them informed.

Donald Trump hates all news publications and broadcasts. They sometimes show him in the light of truth. He cannot stand that.

When I was in the USAF, in the mid to late 60s, and stationed at a remote base in Turkey, the "Air Force Times" was a principal source of news for me. We all depended on it, since other reliable news was hard to come by.

It just seems too much, even for Trump, to actually shut down the press.

Even if he demands it, I don't believe he has the ability to back it up. One way or another, the paper will be published. Newspapers are like that.

On edit:

The memo ordering the publication’s dissolution claims the administration has the authority to make this move under the president’s fiscal year 2021 defense department budget request. It zeroed out the $15.5 million annual subsidy for Stars and Stripes. But Congress, which under the Constitution has the power to make decisions about how the public’s money is spent, has not yet approved the president’s request.

In fact, the version the House approved earlier this summer explicitly overruled the decision to pull the plug on Stars and Stripes, restoring funding for the paper.

So it's up to congress to decide if this will happen. Fat chance.

Trump may want to...
Trump may try to...
But Trump will not shut down Stars & Stripes.

Congress won't be able to stop this. By the time they get a federal court to look at it, S&S won't exist any longer. Staff will be gone. Infrastructure gone. Computer systems gone. Nothing left to work with.

It's also unlikely any federal court will interfere with the workings of the dod communications of this nature. The constitution is clear on who controls the military.

It's the lead picture in it that's from March. That is what, just this week, revealed that the DoD is ordering Stars & Stripes to shut this month, despite the February proposal not being passed in a budget yet (the Dem House budget kept the funding going).

The Army Times, https://www.armytimes.com/ , the Navy Times, https://www.navytimes.com/ , the Air Force Times, etc, still exist.

These are independent, and they aren't pulling any punches. Losing the Stars and Stripes... will just drive our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines to independent, hard hitting alternatives.

Both houses of Congress needs to act, and some Republicans, especially those with military bases in their districts, might get on board. Mitch McConnell especially needs to hear from soldiers at Fort Knox and Fort Campbell who rely on a newspaper addressed to their needs.
