How do you debate a habitual liar? Even if you have a fact checker correct Trump on the spot Trump will make up another lie about what the fact checker said. It's a no win situation. You would just have to respond to everything Trump says beginning with the phrase " That's a lie". It's a worthless effort. Trump will just act like a big asshole bully and re-solidify that part of his base that like that while wasting the time of anyone with even a slight amount of intelligence.

(1,753 posts)known liar and calmly wait for Trump to turn it around and call Biden the liar; similar to what was said when Hillary told Trump he was Putin's puppet. Trump is consistently predictable.

(16,785 posts)What the debates will show is someone who knows the world, the Constitution, how government works, what principles and values look like, and what the issues are that Americans are most concerned about. Joe Biden will have the advantage he because he knows how to put down a bully with that SEG of his.
All Biden has to do is look at Trump in such a way that will make him explode on live TV by saying, "Marlarkey". Trump will not be invading his space like he did with Hillary Clinton. Trump is up against someone who has the capibility to take him down and humiliate him with a smile.
As morbid as it sounds, I want to see Trump get humiliated by someone way smarter than he is.

(22,480 posts)Remember how he answered the question about how his next term will be on Fox.
He went on a rant about experience and talent but talent is better but he has experience and blah blah blah.
Ask him about how to stop a pandemic. What is he going to say? Just ask, if another pandemic comes to the US what will you do? Then let Trump tell a story that is 180 degree difference to what he already did or say that stopping people from China coming here will solve everything.
I personally think Trump is going to get out of the debates because 1. Biden is not a woman and 2. Biden is a smart human being and not a trump rally goer.

I think they need to have him sign it, not some underling, so every time he breaks a rule they cut off his mike and show his signed agreement to the audience and spell out which rule hes broken. Need an off switch on his mike and let him storm off like the baby he is when he cant flout the rules.

(47,430 posts)and will look like a fool. Whenever he lies, Joe can just say, "That's not true" as many times as necessary. Trump is more thin-skinned today than ever, he won't keep his cool on stage with Joe.

(15,411 posts)He rolled through the GOP debates in 2015/16, party because he was entertaining (in a sleazy, Jerry Springer type way). The one debate they had where he skipped (because he was protesting Megan Kelly) was the lowest rated.

(47,430 posts)The difference between now and 2016 is Trump has a whole lot to lose and he isn't as confident as he was back then. He is more like a cornered animal up against a wall now and I expect he'll be more reactive.

(31,261 posts)vetting. Now, Americans have seen what he is about and only haters and fools are still supporting him.
Voters didn't know what he would do as president, now we know. Many people gave him the benefit of the doubt, that doubt no longer exists.
I think sane people knew he would be a bad president, but I must say that as bad as I thought he would be, he turned out much, much worse. In that respect, he did exceed my expectations. I suppose I, like so many, thought there would be experienced people around him, who would curb his excesses and that our institutions would somehow contain him. Who could have foreseen so-called patriotic republicans in congress giving him a free pass at every turn? Having lived through Watergate, I am incredulous that so few stood up to his monster.

Trump supporters arent going to change their mind from a debate.
Biden supporters wont either.
but, undecideds/fence sitters might see a true level headed candidate in Joe and decide to support him at the polls.
No, Joe needs to debate the orange menace, as odious as that is.

Put Trump on the defensive. Make him babble. Confront a lie and call it a lie. Don't fall prey to traps by the "moderators."
Vice-President Biden and Kamala Harris can and will do all of these things.

(3,427 posts)I hope that Trump brings up his lie about passing the Veterans Choice Act (which he almost certainly will if the subject comes up), and that Biden corrects him by explaining that President Obama signed that into law in 2014. Trump had absolutely nothing to do with it.

(5,499 posts)He'll find some reason to back out. Just look at recent press conferences: when Trump gets questioned about lies or missteps, he ends the press conference and walks away.
He won't be able to do that in a debate. His people know that. At this point, Trump probably doesn't have the emotional or physical stamina to make it through a debate.

(13,094 posts)One strategy would be to just dismiss all the lies out of hand because he is "a liar" or "full of shit", and just respond to those statements that you feel warrant a response.
And if any moderator has the gall to try to have you respond to trump bullshit just dismiss it as ridiculous or foolish or stupid or give it an 'are you kidding me?' or 'seriously, man (or ma'am)?' and move on.

Ten bucks says Donnie Dumbass would go running off stage crying if someone squared up to him and knocked him on his ass. Besides, the real fight would be when Donnie Jr. bull rushed the stage trying to play a 'Professional Wrestler' on top of his tough guy image that he peddles.

When Biden shows him up, and calls him out for his lies, it may push Biden's lead up a few more points.
You don't back down from bullies period. Biden (and Harris) can debate circles, ovals, rectangles, and pentagons around Trump (and Pence) so let the games begin I say!

(509 posts)That's overkill. The only debate format that might be worthwhile is the townhall format. Otherwise, I agree with the OP. Biden has little to gain from debating a liar.
