(21,847 posts)I never heard of them before. I looked up their website. It says:
CatholicVote Civic Action is inspired and organized by faithful Catholic laity. For this reason, we do not claim to speak for any individual bishop or the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. We represent the voices of millions of Catholics across America who seek to renew our country and our culture, in full communion with and 100% faithful to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was a bunch of Russian trolls.

(10,828 posts)But I just don't see Trump taking the Catholic vote in 2020. His basic immorality, cruelty and serial lying, his dissing of Pope Francis are steps beyond apology and/or support. Unless you're an ultra-conservative Catholic with a one-issue viewpoint, Donald Trump is an absolute embarrassment to the faith. Any faith.

(25,853 posts)The issue is abortion. Unfortunately.
I honestly don't understand why any thinking person could be a Catholic. Or a Mormon. Or a Southern Baptist. Or almost any organized religion.
The older I get the more bothered I am be religiosity in any form.

(10,828 posts)I come from a very Catholic family. There has always been a division between the conservative, moderate and liberal branches of the Church in the US. Catholics are not monolithic in their attitudes or beliefs. My grandparents were very conservative. Whatever the Church said, they followed. My mother by her very nature was an independent thinker and consequently more moderate. My sister and I and all our cousins were far more liberal in attitude as were many of the young priests we looked up to.
It made for some very interesting holiday dinner conversations.
Yes, abortion remains the main point of contention. When I was a kid, the mother's life was always secondary to the unborn child's. No exceptions. But that thinking has softened over time. There are many more Catholics who will now consider the life of the mother in abortion situations, as well as the exceptions of rape and incest. That might not sound like much in the larger world but it's huge in the Church I grew up in.
Donald Trump's basic immorality, his cruelty and petty vindictiveness rub many Catholics and other people of faith the wrong way. He's an absolute embarrassment, a glaring example of rank hypocrisy. The exception appears to be the evangelical quarter. Though recently I've read that evangelical churches are losing membership to the Q phenomenon. Doesn't say much for the community.
Personally, I walked away from the Church many years ago. But like so many other things with the Catholic faith, I've never been completely divorced. I do respect those of faith who include a number of relatives and good friends. The one thing I've learned is that the truly devout do not clobber you over the head with their religious beliefs. The exhibit their faith in the way they lead their lives with devotion, commitment and love.
And those Catholics consider Donald Trump an absolute horror.

(25,853 posts)I said a lot of them are.
I was always horrified by the notion that the mother's life was always secondary to the unborn child. That thinking may have softened among rank and file Catholics, but I bet if we survey the clergy, we'd find they still mostly think that way.
Donald Trump is supposedly a Presbyterian. The Presbyterians I know are very liberal and totally horrified that he identifies with their church.
You are so right about the truly devout not clobbering us over the head with their beliefs. I have several friends who are sincere, thoughtful, believing members of some church or another. We occasionally have conversations that wander in the territory of belief or faith, and it is precisely their thoughtfulness and lack of dogma that I find attractive.
For me, I completely and totally left the Catholic Church by the time I was 20. I will often say that I was raised Catholic, because that upbringing does inform how I think now.

(45,806 posts)flyer, or whatever it is didn't come from the Catholic Church I ever knew! What about DT's multi marriages, his constant madams, + all the horrid things he's done since he took office? I guess whoever the senders are must just overlook all that, huh? There doesn't seem to be any location on that thing, so who knows where it came from. Damn, maybe the Russians are trying this approach.
The Catholic Church I know put a lot more emphasis on helping people in need, caring for your neighbors, striving not to sin and OH YEAH, being faithful to your spouse & the faith.
This flyer just makes me ashamed if this is what my church has become.

(14,856 posts)The majority of Catholic voters cast their ballots for Trump in 2016. The majority of senior citizens did, too.
Surely no one is surprised by this. We're going to see all kinds of Christian organizations coming out of the woodwork, trying to frighten the faithful into voting for Trump. He got the majority of the Christians' votes in 2016. He could not have won without them. If he doesn't get most of them again in 2020, he has no chance.
