My letter to the Los Angeles Times re: The Atlantic expose

The most telling incident of Trump’s contempt for military service was his standing with Gen. John Kelly at Kelly’s son’s graveside in Arlington National Cemetery. The putative Commander in Chief said: “I don’t get it. What was in it for them?”

This is something the Trumps of the world will never understand: duty, honor, sacrifice, love of country, and most of all love for something beyond one’s self, a love that enlarges and expands the self.

“I don’t get it. What was in it for them?” Trump understands nothing outside buying and selling, nothing outside his small self. Not honor, or duty, or sacrifice for others. Nothing. He is the Abyss walking on two legs. He is a sucking wound. He shames this nation past endurance.

...made a career of it. We don’t reflexively think all our wars are just, especially after Vietnam hit my generation.

But by the gods, the youngsters who go forth in our name and those who serve honorably for however many years, deserve our care and our respect. Trump has betrayed them as he has betrayed us.
