UMD men's basketball team 100% registered to vote as stadium becomes early voting center
WASHINGTON (ABC7) The University of Marylands XFINITY Center has been selected as an advanced polling center for the upcoming 2020 Presidential General Election. It will serve as one of 11 early voting locations in Prince George's County from Oct. 26 through election day on Nov. 3.
"This may be the most significant competition ever to play out in our arena," said University of Maryland President Darryll J. Pines in a Wednesday press release. "Making it more convenient for voters and increasing turnout contributes to the cornerstone of our democracy. I'm extremely proud that our student-athletes took the lead in making this happen."
The arena is usually home to the Maryland mens and womens basketball teams.
Now, head coach Coach Mark Turgeon tells ABC7's Scott Abraham that the student athletes of the Maryland mens basketball team are 100 percent registered to vote, as well.
It was all player driven," he said.
"When all the George Floyd death happened, we started meeting and talking and doing things. It was really the players and the want to educate themselves, Turgeon said. Weve been 100 percent for eight weeks to be honest with you. Our players are really driven on it. It was important to us, the one thing that we are going to do also is that we are going to educate them.
