(34,857 posts)His constant rhetoric about how great the economy was, how it's the best economy ever and how awesome everyone's 401K is doing, worked.
People started buying it - especially those who actually had jobs.
One of the more frustrating things about Obama was how he always downplayed the recovery. I get why. He didn't want to showboat about an economy when it still wasn't working for everyone. But even days when the job report was really good, he'd pepper in language about how the economy was still not working for so many people. True, obviously, but it created an illusion that the economy wasn't all that great.
Trump went out and decided instead of focusing on the problematic areas of the recovery, he'd just focus on all the good and take credit for it.
It stuck.

GDP in Obama's best year was 3.1 Trump's best year (pre-pandemic) was 3.0.
Most people don't know that. They believe 45 when he says he's done more.
