The call was from an 1-888 number. A recording told me of suspicious activity on my Amazon account -- a $795 order of a new iPhone. In order to dispute this charge, I was to stay on the line to talk to a representative and ....
That's when I hung up.
I do have an Amazon account which I use a fair bit, but I checked and there are no alerts or suspicious activities and no iPhones have been ordered, nor were any emails sent.
A scam, obviously, and my second of the day but this was a new one.

(3,620 posts)They are saying that my annual fee of $174 is due, and to press #1 on the phone to process it.
I hung up. I know when my annual fee is due, and I know the amount, and I also know Amazon never calls for this.

(14,559 posts)first thing ask, "What are you wearing?" Then just continue on that theme to see how long they stay with you. Who knows? It could be entertaining and you could wind up with a 'friend'.

(6,261 posts)Especially since I used to work for Microsoft on the Windows NT team and could quickly expose their bullshit. I remember telling them I hoped they believed in Karma, as they would surely return as a stinkbug in their next life.
Got old quickly though.

(29,098 posts)It was relentless. Calling every 5 min. I couldn't block it as they appear to have a way to avoid having their number pop up. Nomorobo didn't block either. I disabled all rings from unknown numbers which is extremely inconvenient. However it's better than hearing never ending rings. PITA

(8,445 posts)About a week ago I got a text alert from my bank about a charge from SteamGames. I immediately turned off my credit card and then called the number for unauthorized purchases. The guy I spoke to said that four purchases had already gone through, and there were many attempts. The next morning I checked my email and found 24 email alerts in 11 minutes.
I hate thieves.

(6,261 posts)Almost always "Hi, my name is (woman's name) speaking on a recorded line", followed by some claim about a supposed interest I have shown in supplemental Medicare programs, employment or educational opportunities, whatever.
I used to ask them to confirm my social security number or something like that, but they always tried to change the subject.
Now I just hang up on them.

(15,092 posts)The only detail that seems to change is the month the package is supposed have gone unclaimed. They get deleted immediately, of course.
I also, for some reason, get Republican texts about defeating socialism. I always answer with a text about how much I love socialism, but that doesnt seem to have deterred them.

(6,261 posts)A third-party temporary VoIP call, such as Skype never calls with a recognisable phone number but I think I've seen a 1-888 in the CID.
Might have been an 866, though, but I can't swear to that either.

(42,772 posts)Some times it may be for nefarious reasons and some times it might be a reasonably legit operation but the number shown could be their sales dept (as an example) in case you call them back.
