Top GOP senator calls for Biden to release list of possible Supreme Court picks

Don't do it, Joe. Let Grassley et al. stew. But Merrick Garland's name might be enough to shut them up. Or not.

Top GOP senator calls for Biden to release list of possible Supreme Court picks
By Jordain Carney - 09/16/20 08:52 AM EDT

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the former chairman and current member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, is calling for Democratic nominee Joe Biden to release a list of candidates that he would consider for the Supreme Court.

Grassley's push for Biden to release a public list comes after President Trump took the unusual step of releasing a list in 2016 in a bid to shore up his support with conservatives. He released another list last week that included an additional 20 Supreme Court prospects.

“I hope Vice President Biden will agree with me that the American people deserve this information before the election, not after. I call on Vice President Biden to release the list of names from which he would nominate to the Supreme Court, no later than September 30th," Grassley said in a statement.

"The Biden-Harris ticket owes voters the same transparency President Trump has demonstrated along with the same commitment to nominate from that list should there be a vacancy. There’s no reason to hide something as consequential as who would be named to our highest court,” he added.

Top Senate Democrats, including members of the Judiciary Committee, have argued that Biden should not release a list.

“I sincerely hope he does not do that,” Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) told The Hill earlier this year. “We ought to go back to the regular order of things. If and when vacancies occur he can look for the very best person at that moment."

There are so many variables. Besides, if Biden wins but we don't take back the Senate, Moscow Mitch will not allow him to appoint any justices.

Secondly, the SC nomination will be different if we have senate majority than if we don't. I am sure if we have the senate, none of Trump's nominations would go through and he has to put up some more reasonable people which wouldn't be from his announced list.

Obvious politicization. They're trying to use a refusal to provide a list as a stunt.

I see it now: "Where's his list? What's he hiding."

When you were chair of the committee, Mr. Grassley, you didn't do YOUR job and hold hearings on Merrick Garland.

VP Biden doesn't need to give you sh*t.

Accessory to gang-rape Brett. Brett of the Bush crime family.

Brett who drugged drinks at a party so girls could be gang raped. Accessory.

They just want to use whatever he would put out there to attack him (and pre-emptively attack them). Not that Joe would likely be nominating anybody super controversial or anything, but no need to give them additional fodder.

Biden either commits himself to a slate of moderates, or the Pubs get a major new avenue of attack

I'll give Grassley credit, that is a dirty little trap he is trying to spring

Joe needs to completely ignore this.
