At what point do claims of authority and legitimacy break down in regards to those who do not obey or honor their oaths and work work in a way that contradicts the very rules and Constitutional constraints that convey any legitimacy to them?

They are not entrusted to their positions by We The People with an inherit power to interpret everything their own way while still claiming authority. They must abide by that which confers the legitimacy to them or they then lose it by default.

There has to be a line somewhere here that is drawn. Otherwise, our governmental institutions are far too frail and impotent in the face of an onslaught such as this. Just how far do they get to go?

I think that assumed legitimacy requires a test and a proof and an indication that it has a basis.

The FBI’s activities are closely and regularly scrutinized by a variety of entities. Congress—through several oversight committees in the Senate and House—reviews the FBI’s budget appropriations, programs, and selected investigations. The results of FBI investigations are often reviewed by the judicial system during court proceedings. Within the U.S. Department of Justice, the FBI is responsible to the attorney general, and it reports its findings to U.S. Attorneys across the country. The FBI’s intelligence activities are overseen by the Director of National Intelligence.

Attorney general does not have the authority to fire an FBI director. The FBI director is in charge of staffing the leadership of FBI offices. As far as I can tell, atty general would have no power to hire or fire an agent. In what sense does he think the agents are "his"?
