Trump campaign ad evokes antisemitic trope by casting Bernie Sanders as puppet master

The Trump campaign ran a Facebook advertisement depicting Senator Bernie Sanders as a puppet master controlling presidential candidate Joe Biden on Tuesday, one of a series of similar ads depicting politicians, including former president Barack Obama and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, as puppeteers manipulating Biden.

The trope of the “puppet master Jew” has been traced back to the 18th century and is thought to stem from stereotypes that Jews orchestrate world politics and economies. The trope was prominently featured in Nazi propaganda and remains a threatening vector for anti-Semitism today. Social media posts by the shooter who attacked the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh were directly linked to this trope.

Biden is known as a centrist, but the Trump campaign has depicted him as a pawn for leftist causes and politicians ranging from “Antifa” to vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris. According to a July statement released by Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien, the campaign “will expose Joe Biden as a hapless tool of the extreme left and contrast his failures with the undeniable successes of President Trump.”

but he is running against Biden. Biden wisely engaged Bernie to unify the base. Don’t worry. We are going to kick Trump’s ass

Stephen Colbert even brought a real socialist on his show to ask if Obama is a socialist and he said, "No, he's a capitalist".

They always call Democrats socialists no matter who runs.

Also many on the right believed in Alex Jones conspiracies that Obama would install a Muslim-Marxist dictatorship.

You don't think that would have been broadcast 24/7?

Even Bernie knows that's not something that's going to help him, because he's omitted it from his bio.

And maybe you don't remember Obama declining to speak in front of Muslim audiences in 2008. His staffers stated that he had a "very tightly wrapped" message, but everyone knew that it was so that he wouldn't give any fodder to the GOP for their false claims that he was lying about being a Christian.

Anti-semitic tropes and this is the response?
What's wrong with my response? It's clear to anyone that Trump was chomping at the bit and would not be denied all that he had hoped and planned for.

In my opinion I think this kind of thing would backfire like their fear mongering anti-immigration ads during the midterms.

I hope this ad backfires as well. I just want Trump gone.

Clearly, you were mistaken. In my opinion, nothing he says is shocking or unexpected. I can't spend every waking moment wringing my hands and pulling out my hair over every offensive thing he utters. All I'm trying to say is this: I think it's wrong for anyone to judge, question or disparage me because I wasn't overwrought or more-critical of Trump.

4. At any other time this would be characterized as "flailing".

There's not even vague substance to the threat. It is clearly a bold, anti-semitic smear against both Biden and Sanders. And one would expect the electorate to have a good belly laugh at the -- it would have to be "fringe candidate" -- who used it.

But not this time. This time at least 40,000,000 Americans will see or hear (they can hardly be expected to read) the accusation and accept it as true. True because, well, y; know, jews.

And another 20,000,000 will see what Trump and his authoritarian gang is doing but figure it's all just political showmanship and, so, maintain their determination to vote for Trump.

And Trump, far from being on the "fringe" is the incumbent.

Can Biden beat 60,000,000 votes +5%? Nate Silver suggests that he will need at least a 5% lead in the popular vote to guarantee a victory. That's close to 70,000,000 votes. He can do it. Yes, certainly he can do it. It can be done. But if he doesn't do it, the Electoral College may give the throne to Trump once again, Trump who would have been the fringiest of fringe candidates 20 years ago.

And America will be over.

15. Thanks for pointing that out. However

I was speaking of the 60,000,000 votes that Trump might get. Not the entirety of the votes cast, just the votes for Trump.

Now if you do the math showing his 60,000,000 = 47% of how many votes, the assumption in the calc. is that about 130,000,000 people will vote of which about 70,000,000 will have to be for Biden.

(If more than 130,000,000 people vote, my guess/hunch is that most of the additional votes will be Democratic, which would make it a bit more likely that Biden would win a decisive victory over Trump. But I caution you that I am an English, not a statistics, major.)
