OP
Copyright law says you can't copy so much that reading the original article becomes irrelevant.

No. You can't post entire copyrighted articles only a maximum of 4-paragraph excerpts...

(22,035 posts)1. Only with the written permission of the copyright holder
Otherwise, you're supposed to excerpt up to 4 paragraphs.
I think that's the principal, anyway.

(102,238 posts)2. Copyright law requires you to excerpt---usually 4-5 paragraphs is ok
It is most useful to snip important sections to convey the most important 4-5 total paragraphs (Given current typesetting typically will offset quotes into its own paragraph, one can get away with just a bit more if you snip these sections)

(37,159 posts)3. Four paragraphs is considered ok for fair use standards
I would suggest picking the most appropriate four, since often people just post the first four but sometimes those are preliminaries and don't get into the substance of the article.

Copyright-law is pretty murky. But that's basically one of the standards judges go by in copyright-cases.

Steady drumbeat of misinformation: FBI chief warns of Russian interference in US elections
Chris Wray says bureau has seen very active efforts by Russians
Efforts are primarily meant to denigrate Joe Biden

Christopher Wray, the FBI director, on Thursday warned that Russia is interfering in the 2020 US presidential elections with a steady stream of misinformation aimed at undermining Democrat Joe Biden as well as sapping Americans confidence in the election process.
Moscow is also attempting to undercut what it sees as an anti-Russian US establishment, Wray told the Democratic-led House of Representatives homeland security committee in a hearing on Capitol Hill.
<snip>
Wrays testimony follows a 7 August warning by the director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center that Russia, China and Iran were all trying to interfere in the 3 November election.
Multiple reviews by US intelligence agencies have concluded that Russia acted to boost Donald Trumps 2016 campaign and damage his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton. The Republican president has long bristled at that finding, which Russia officially denies despite special counsel Robert Mueller indicting Russian operatives for meddling in order to help Trump.

Use the /excerpt tool at the beginning and end of your post in order to make it show up in the gray area as shown above.
Post the url link. Post the full article title, sub-title, author and date. Post up to 4 paragraphs, choosing the most important ones to convey the information you wish to share with DU. Use <snip> to indicate skipped paragraphs and use more... to indicate that there is more to the article, unless you post the last paragraph.
You would post the exact title in the reply title or the original post title.
Edit: It is a DU courtesy to post a 4 paragraph excerpt instead of just posting a link to an article or news story. I really dislike link only posts. I dont want to click through, especially to unfamiliar sites or sites like The Daily Mail, which I endeavor to avoid.
You can also post pictures from the story. Note that not all image links will display properly on DU. I wasnt able to post the picture from the article above. It only shows as a url:
