Why do Kentucky Democrats put up candidates like Alison Grimes and McGrath?
I'm not from Kentucky, but how does this guy get reelected over and over?

(6,039 posts)His heart gave out or I believe he would still be reelected today.
McConnell has the uncanny ability to parlay his unpopularity into 'sure I'm bad but my opponent is even worse'. Works every time unfortunately.

(4,845 posts)But if you are on the other side, you might personally hate him but he successfully got tons of people on the court and now possibly a 6-3 SC. You will vote for him to reward what he did.

(4,167 posts)And always nominating the same tired old safe candidate who can appeal to voters who are never going to vote for them anyway....would have liked to see them take a chance with Booker

(11,949 posts)We gave away the Florida Governors race in 18 by nominating the progressive candidate. Who is now proven to be a train wreck.
Had we gone with the traditional pick we would have a Democratic Governor now.
Kentucky is not voting against McConnell. No matter who we run.
States like Florida and especially Kentucky are not electing progressives.

Very white, uneducated and evangelical population.
Trump will do better there than most any other state.
Louisville and Lexington are bright blue. Parts of Northern Kentucky is not too bad. The rest of the state is worse than Alabama.
And the rural percentage of the population is very high.

(22,062 posts)And we're tired of people assuming we're all a bunch of hick dimwits here.
McConnell is where he is because of habit and money. He's been there so long that people have forgotten they even have a choice. And while he thumbs his nose at small towns and the coal miners he promised to help, he has big money thrown at him by the wealthy in Louisville and Lexington (even though they are fairly Dem these days). Its old money. Not only here, but nationwide by the McNasties who get what they want from him. And then there's the Russians.
Amy McGrath can beat him. But the ads he runs about her are particularly venomous lies. I wish Bloomberg would give her a bundle.
Last time I saw the stats, he had the worst approval ratings here (32%), than any other senator in their states.

(111,085 posts)There are more Democrats in KY than Repubs. If they turn out and the Republican vote is depressed, as it seems to be with McConnell, I would think McGrath has a shot at it.

(7,596 posts)His own constituents dont seem to like him all that much, yet hes comfortably reelected every single time. I guess their deranged hatred of Democrats easily exceeds their dislike of McConnell.

(35,438 posts)All that he has to do is appeal to their racism, and he wins out every time. He doesn't have to improve their health care, their education, their jobs, nothing. Just appeal to their racism and he wins.
No being held accountable by his people allows him free reign to do whatever he wants, and he's not the only Republican that can do this. Several others can do the same.

(509 posts)With the right candidate. Kentucky politics is a back slapping, good ol' boys network. And that's for Democrats too. And we do like our family dynasties here. That's why we have Gov. Beshear. Democrats can and will win in the state so long as you come across as a Kentuckian more than anything. If people feel like you're one of them, they will trust you and vote for you.
One thing Kentuckians love is UK basketball and Matt Jones, the hugely popular sports radio and TV host flirted with running against Mitch. He's just the type of person that could've beat him. He's from Appalachia, but a true progressive and hugely popular with this ubiquitous media appearances about UK sports. But he chose not to run and we got stuck with Amy McGrath who has a severe foot in the mouth disease and keeps making a lot of gaffes and runs a very uninspiring campaign.
