Roland Burris (D) was appointed to the seat on December 31, 2008, but his credentials were not accepted until January 12, 2009.
An election dispute over the Minnesota seat previously held by Norm Coleman (R), between Coleman and challenger Al Franken (D), was decided in June 30, 2009, in favor of Franken.[7] Franken's admission gave the Senate Democratic caucus sixty votes, enough to defeat a filibuster in a party-line vote. So, she should have been forced to "retire" up to 10 years before she was ready? TwilightZone Sep 2020 #4

Barack Obama appointee two justices. She could have stepped down at any time before 2015 and her vacancy would have been filled.

Hindsight is 20/20 of course and she had a right to continue. But let’s not all kid ourselves by making some silly ham handed attempt at retconning. It’s kind of ridiculous.

Obama could have replaced RBG if she had stepped down a few months prior to the senate transition in 2015. That, provided DINO's didn't spoil it, is the rewritten past.

If she had stepped down in early 2009 or early 2013 they it would have been fine. Here again, enough with the retconning bullshit, folks.

seems somewhat prickly. Is that appropriate? Did I miss something? But to the subject at hand. Always with the best attempt at good humor.

I recall, since her first run in with cancer, I had been concerned that RBG had not/would not, remove herself from the SC opportunely. Thus causing a potential catastrophe when/if she were to "die-in-the-saddle". She missed her last good chance in the fall/winter of 2014. That's why we are where we are today. It's a sad business all round.

RBG just didn't take one for the team. Not like Sandy Day-O'Connor, who did the dirty deed required for her cause in 2000, puttered about for a few more years and tottered off into retirement, where she yet lives, cursing the gruel that keeps her alive, to remember and be haunted by her travesty of a life, in the face of so much youthful promise. Alas, success is no easy thing and the air from the mighty heights of a USSC justice's vantage may be unhealthy for body and soul.
